Embedding climate science into every standard with the London Declaration

How can we help the world adapt to the impacts of climate change? By revising all our standards, making them future fit.

“The London Declaration will help organizations find a faster, more effective route to sustainability.”

Sebastiaan Van Dort Associate Director Energy and Sustainability at BSI
The Challenge

The world is off-track to meet net zero by 2050

Fewer than one in four of the world's largest companies are on course to meet basic climate change objectives, while Europe looks set to miss its 2030 goal for cutting emissions by a full 21 years.

Governments and businesses alike must do more to tackle climate change, and there is no time to waste. A report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2021 predicted the global limit of 1.5°C will be reached by 2040 or sooner unless emissions are slashed in the next few years.

But without up-to-date and climate-friendly international standards, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for organizations to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and by the United Nations.

The Solution

Bringing together the entire ISO community

Accelerating our progress towards a sustainable world required an innovative approach to standards development: The London Declaration.

The London Declaration is a commitment led by BSI and adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to actively factor climate science into standards development. It is also a pledge to involve those most vulnerable to climate change in the standard development process.

Following the signing of the London Declaration at the ISO General Assembly 2021, BSI has committed to revising its catalogue of 5,000 national standards, and working with the international community to align all standards with the latest climate science.
