Small Businesses and the UK Safety Sentencing Guidelines
The UK Safety Sentencing Guidelines were introduced earlier this year, to help determine the severity of penalty fines an organization will incur should it not properly identify and manage risks of potential harm to others.
Whilst turnover is taken into account when safety sentencing guidelines are being applied in a court of law, it is culpability and disregard for managing risks to peoples safety, that has the greatest financial impact on an organization.
The difference in fines applied to an organization deemed as ‘low culpability’ compared to an organization deemed as ‘high culpability’ could make or break a small business. With 90% of the UK economy being made up of SMEs, this heightens the need for small and medium sized businesses to consider how to manage the potential impact the UK Safety Sentencing Guidelines could have on their future.
