The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office for Low Emission Vehivles (OLEV) are working with the British Standards Institute (BSI) to facilitate the uptake of safe, secure and interoperable ESAs, including electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints, for the active management of demand on the electricity network. The ESA programme, led by BSI, includes the development of two Publicly Available Specifications (PASs) looking at the classification for energy smart appliances (ESAs) and creating a framework for demand side response (DSR).

Standards Landscape Report
The ESA programme was developed in response to the recommendations set out in the Secure and interoperable use of smart appliances and electric vehicle smart chargepoints through standards report commissioned by BEIS and OLEV. The report aims to inform a wider policy, and standardization, by first understanding the standards landscape in relation to the smart appliances and EV chargepoints.
