8 October 2026: The BSI Kitemark™ for Digital Twins is a new certification scheme designed to help organizations demonstrate that their digital twin capability is secure, well governed and delivering measurable business outcomes.
Digital twins are becoming increasingly important across infrastructure, construction, energy, smart cities and other asset-intensive industries. By enabling organizations to create dynamic virtual representations of physical assets, systems and operations, digital twins bring together data from across the built environment and make it more usable, connected and actionable.
When combined with AI and analytics, this insight can support better decision-making, predict and optimize performance, reduce costs, support more sustainable asset management and unlock innovation throughout an asset's lifecycle. This can help organizations improve operational efficiency, reduce carbon and resource use, enhance resilience and deliver better outcomes for people, places and the planet.
However, adoption is often outpacing maturity. As investment in digital twins accelerates, organizations face growing pressure to demonstrate that their digital twin capability is delivering real value, supported by effective governance, appropriate security controls and the organizational capability needed to scale successfully.
The BSI Kitemark™ for Digital Twins has been developed to address these challenges. Built on the internationally recognized BS ISO/IEC 30186 Digital Twin Maturity Model and additional requirements covering governance, competency, security, risk management and value realization, the scheme provides independent assurance of an organization's digital twin capability.
It assesses both the maturity of a specific digital twin and the organization's ability to deploy, govern and continually improve digital twin solutions over time. It provides confidence that clear ownership, accountability and controls are in place, while demonstrating that digital twins are being used to deliver measurable operational outcomes aligned to business objectives.
The first BSI Digital Twin Kitemark was awarded to Neuron at a ceremony in Hong Kong today. The digital twin, maturity model and assessment guidance independently verified how effectively Neuron’s live digital twins and supporting systems are managed, from their intended purpose through to value, security and ongoing management.
All organizations that achieve certification can demonstrate to customers, investors, regulators and supply chain partners that their digital twin capability has been independently assessed against recognized best practice and international standards.
Andy Butterfield, Managing Director Built Environment, BSI said:
