21/10/26: In BSI’s 125th year, the milestone reflects how quickly organizations around the world are moving from AI experimentation to demonstrable, independently assured governance.
BSI has awarded its 50th certification to ISO/IEC 42001, the world’s first AI management system standard. The milestone, reached on Wednesday 21st October 2026, when UKG Inc., based on Lowell, Massachusetts, received its certificate, marks a defining moment in the global adoption of independently assured AI governance – less than two years after the first certificate was issued.
BSI has certified organizations across over 16 countries and four regions, spanning technology, financial services, professional services, healthcare, manufacturing and the public sector. Reaching 50 certifications in less than two years highlights that AI governance is increasingly becoming an immediate business priority.
The geographic spread of BSI’s 50 certified organizations shows that demand for AI assurance is genuinely international, rather than concentrated in any single market.
The organizations certified vary in size, sector and AI maturity, demonstrating the broad applicability of ISO/IEC 42001.
The pace of adoption underlines the urgency organizations feel. BSI issued 11 certificates throughout 2025. In 2026 alone, that figure has more than tripled, amid growing pressure from regulators, customers and boards for organizations to demonstrate that AI is being managed responsibly.
Omkar Joshi, Managing Director - AI & Digital Solutions, adds "Reaching 50 ISO/IEC 42001 certificates in less than two years tells us something important: organizations aren't waiting for regulation to force the issue. They're choosing to demonstrate responsible AI governance because their customers, partners and regulators expect it. What we're seeing across 16 countries is a genuine shift – from organizations asking whether AI governance matters, to asking how to evidence it. That's the right question, and we're here to help them answer it."
Artificial intelligence is transforming organizations across every sector. To adopt and deploy AI safely, ethically and responsibly, businesses need strong governance structures that inspire trust.
ISO/IEC 42001 is the world’s first AI management system standard. It provides a structured framework to manage AI risks, strengthen transparency, and ensure accountability. Certification demonstrates that an organization has robust controls in place for the development, deployment and ongoing management of AI systems – giving customers, investors, partners and regulators confidence that AI is being used responsibly.
The standard applies to any organization working with AI, whatever its size, sector or technical maturity. That includes developers who design and train AI systems, providers and integrators who build AI into products and platforms, and enterprises adopting AI for automation, analytics, decision-making or customer experience.
Organizations that certify to ISO/IEC 42001 can:
BSI is the first triple-accredited certification body by UKAS, RvA in the Netherlands and ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) in North America to certify ISO/IEC 42001.
Our auditors combine deep management system experience with a practical understanding of AI, and we audit globally through hybrid, remote and on-site approaches. On certification, organizations receive a BSI Mark of Trust to demonstrate their achievement.
For 125 years, organizations have relied on BSI to help build confidence in the products, services and systems that shape everyday life. Reaching 50 ISO/IEC 42001 certificates, in BSI’s 125th year, reflects that purpose, and of the commitment organizations worldwide are making to AI they can stand behind.
