    Velindre University NHS Trust delivers specialist cancer services, national blood services and innovation programmes across Wales, supporting patients, donors and health boards.

    The Challenge

    Building a Robust Innovation Framework in a Complex NHS Environment

    With limited infrastructure and resources, the Trust needed a structured approach to innovation that aligned with NHS governance while enabling collaboration and growth.

    When the innovation function was established, Velindre University NHS Trust operated with a small team that needed to build capability and governance while aligning with strategic objectives across research, development and education. Adapting an industry-led standard to the NHS context also presented complexity, requiring careful translation into practical, value-driven processes that would support patients, staff and partners.

    The Solution

    Embedding ISO 56001 to Enable Structured, Scalable Innovation

    Working with BSI, Velindre implemented ISO 56001 and achieved the Kitemark, using a gap analysis and collaborative approach to embed effective innovation systems.

    The Trust began by aligning its strategy with ISO 56002, before progressing to ISO 56001 certification and the BSI Kitemark. A detailed gap analysis provided clarity on readiness and areas for improvement. Through a collaborative audit process, systems and governance were refined to meet both NHS and industry expectations. The Kitemark was selected to go beyond compliance, providing independent validation and strengthening credibility for future partnerships.
