    The People

One of the UK’s busiest airports driving low-carbon infrastructure

London Gatwick is committed to delivering low‑carbon infrastructure as part of its net‑zero future.

    The Challenge

Embedding whole‑life carbon reduction into a large, fast‑moving capital programme while meeting strategic and regulatory expectations.

London Gatwick needed a robust, integrated approach to carbon management that aligned with its northern runway commitments and long‑term carbon goals.

Gatwick faced the dual challenge of meeting planning commitments for its northern runway project while ensuring carbon reduction became an integral part of everyday decision‑making. As a private, cost‑conscious business, the airport needed to demonstrate both environmental and financial value. Leadership also required clarity on how PAS 2080 could strengthen existing processes rather than sit as an isolated compliance activity.

    The Solution

Integrating PAS 2080 into London Gatwick’s established project governance and upskilling teams across construction and engineering.

Gatwick partnered with BSI as its certification body, to validate efforts to embed whole‑life carbon principles into planning, design, procurement and cost management from the outset.

Gatwick mapped PAS 2080 into its existing process‑driven project model, weaving carbon checks into cost, procurement, design and approval stages.

BSI auditors brought deep expertise, providing insight, constructive challenge and reference to recognised industry good practices. Gatwick upskilled quantity surveyors, engineers and project teams so carbon ownership sat across the department. Carbon competence was added to role profiles and KPIs, creating consistency and accountability.

    The Benefits

A stronger, more carbon‑aware project culture.
