Approved Document L 2026: Are You Ready for the Transition?

Discover four practical steps fenestration businesses can take now to prepare for product specific U-value calculations.

Although implementation is still ahead, fenestration businesses involved in new-build housing should not view Approved Document L 2026 as a distant challenge. The transition to product-specific U-value calculations will require planning, investment and collaboration across the supply chain.

    Four actions to take now

    1. Review your current calculation capabilities

Assess whether your existing systems can generate opening size-specific U-values that incorporate all required components and configurations.

    2. Engage with your customers

Talk to house builders, SAP assessors and warranty providers about their expectations and implementation timelines. Early conversations can reduce future disruption.

    3. Explore automation

Manual processes will be unable to meet future demands. Automation will be essential for efficiency, consistency and scalability.

    4. Demonstrate credibility

As scrutiny of construction product information increases, businesses will need to show that their data is accurate, reliable and compliant with regulations.

    Build trust through certification

To support the industry, BSI announced two new certificates of conformity:

    • A certificate for window and door set calculations.
    • A certificate for U-value calculation software programs.

Together, these schemes are designed to provide independent assurance that both the underlying thermal data and the calculation methodology align with recognised standards and Approved Document L requirements.

    The bigger picture

The Future Homes Standard is part of a broader movement towards more accurate building performance emissions. Organizations that prepare now will not only be ready for compliance but will be better positioned to build trust, strengthen customer relationships and differentiate themselves in an increasingly data-driven market.
