Gas Appliance Regulation (EU 2016/426)

What is the Gas Appliance Regulation about?

In April 2018 the Gas Appliances Directive (GAD) was withdrawn and replaced by the Gas Appliance Regulation (GAR) (EU 2016/426) for appliances burning gaseous fuels and fittings intended to be incorporated within gas appliances.

Any non-compliant products with the new gas Regulation must be withdrawn from the market immediately.

Compliance with this Regulation is need for European market access and products falling within the scope of this Regulation must bear the CE marking. Work with BSI as your partner of choice for market access solutions to achieve this.

Who is the Gas Appliance Regulation for and what does it cover?

The Regulation is for manufacturers, including own brand retailers, of appliances or fittings that have been designed or manufactured in order to be placed upon the European market.

Products that fall under the scope of the Regulation must affix the CE marking and include:

  • Appliances burning gaseous fuel (“appliances”) and fittings
  • New or second-hand appliances imported from a country outside of the EU
  • All forms of supply including distance sales

The scope of the Regulation applies to “appliances” and “fittings” and has the following exclusions:

  • Products specifically designed for industrial processes carried out on industrial premises
  • Products for use on aircrafts and railways
  • Products for research purposes for temporary use in laboratories
  • Appliances possessing historic or artistic value and not put into service e.g. antiques
  • Persons who manufacture appliances on a nonprofessional basis and use the products exclusively for their own purposes.

What products do we test?

We test appliances that burn gas (of any type) from small household products up to larger commercial appliances for the purposes of:

  • Space heating
  • Cooking
  • Water heating
  • Refrigeration
  • Lighting
  • Washing

We also test the supply of forced draught gas burners along with safety and control devices that are intended to be used within gas appliances.

Are you ready for UKCA marking for gas appliances?

UKCA marking is effective in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) from 1 January 2021, so if you place gas appliances or associated fittings on the market in Great Britain you will need to affix the UKCA marking (although CE marking will also be recognized for most products until the end of 2021).

BSI is an approved body (0086) to support UKCA marking services for gas appliances and can work with you to navigate this new regulatory landscape.

Next steps to CE marking

As a Notified Body, we can evaluate all products in the scope of the Regulation through the following two-stage process:

1. Type Examination

Laboratory evaluation of the product to ensure it complies with the essential requirements of the Directive (typically by using an EN standard).  This may be at one of our laboratories, your site, or a partner laboratory.

2. Product Surveillance

Ongoing assessment of production processes to ensure the essential requirements continue to be met.

© The British Standards Institution (current year)

Impartiality is the governing principle of how BSI provides its services. Impartiality means acting fairly and equitably in its dealings with people and in all business operations. It means decisions are made free from any engagements of influences which could affect the objectivity of decision making.

As an accredited certification body, BSI Assurance cannot offer certification to clients where they have also received consultancy from another part of the BSI Group for the same management system. Likewise, we do not offer consultancy to clients when they also seek certification to the same management system.

The British Standards Institution (BSI, a company incorporated by Royal Charter), performs the National Standards Body (NSB) activity in the UK. BSI, together with its Group Companies, also offers a broad portfolio of business solutions other than NSB activity that help businesses worldwide to improve results through Standards-based best practice (such as certification, self-assessment tool, software, product testing, information products and training).
