    The People

Leading the charge towards sustainable events

Edgbaston is the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and a venue renowned for domestic and international cricket matches.

Located in the heart of Birmingham, it also hosts corporate and entertainment events, from business conferences and exhibitions to banquets and fireworks displays. Edgbaston's goal was to become the game's most sustainable cricket business.

    The Challenge

    Driving change through awareness

The erratic weather resulting from the climate emergency is affecting all aspects of people's lives, including how they're able to participate in and watch sport.

Cricket is a weather-dependent sport, and therefore one of the sports most at risk from climate change. By operating more sustainably, stadia and their events play a vital role in creating positive, sustainable impact. Edgbaston has adopted a four-pillar sustainability strategy: cutting energy use; recycling and waste management; reducing carbon footprint; and education, health and wellbeing initiatives. It sought to drive wider change by raising the environmental awareness of fans, staff and the local community.

    The Solution

Becoming a game changer through certification

Edgbaston recognized Sustainable Events Management certification would provide the framework, policies and procedures it needed to support change.

All events hosted at the stadium are included in the scope of work. A key focus is on cutting carbon emissions across all scopes of the ground's footprint. Measures include use of renewable energy, compostable food packaging, no single-use plastics, increased recycling and improved bus links. It also means assessing the sustainability credentials of suppliers and working in collaboration with sustainability partners.
