How Beard Construction reduced incidents, improved engagement and built a proactive safety culture through ISO 45001 with BSI.
“ISO 45001, combined with BSI’s auditing approach, has helped us build a stronger, safer and more competitive business.”
Beard delivers refurbishment and new-build projects across multiple live sites, supported by a large contractor network.
Previously certified to OHSAS 18001, Beard had established procedures, but audits were largely desktop-based and lacked visibility of site-level practices. Manual, paper-driven systems made data capture inconsistent, while high contractor turnover made it difficult to embed a unified safety culture. Growing client expectations and competitive tender requirements demanded a more formal, proactive and demonstrable health and safety management system.
Implementing ISO 45001 marked a natural progression from OHSAS 18001, introducing a more proactive and prevention-focused approach to managing risk. The framework strengthened top management involvement, improved workforce consultation and supported open reporting across sites. It also enabled Beard to integrate health and safety with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, creating a more streamlined and aligned management system that improved consistency, accountability and performance across the business.
Beard chose BSI as a trusted leader in certification. The depth and rigour of BSI’s audits helped embed health and safety into daily operations, supporting safer sites, stronger culture and improved competitiveness when bidding for new work.
