Driving action and creating change against antimicrobial resistance

According to the World Health Organization, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been declared a top 10 global public health threat and is expected to get worse unless action is taken. It threatens to undermine the basis of modern medicine by rendering the antibiotics used to treat and prevent infections ineffective. Resistance can come from many sources – BSI is working with the pharmaceutical industry to focus on the evolution of responsible manufacturing of antibiotics.

Manufacturing waste from the production of antibiotics may contribute to the development of AMR in the environment unless emissions from waste streams are effectively controlled.

BSI, in collaboration with the AMR Industry Alliance, will launch an industry antibiotic manufacturing certification scheme on 6 June 2023. In this event, you will learn how BSI will serve as an assessment body role that will enable antibiotic manufacturers to demonstrate that the environmental management, including waste water management and control requirements of the antibiotic manufacturing standard (which launched June 2022) have been satisfied.

This independent and impartial certification program is perfectly situated to serve as a mechanism for antibiotic manufacturers to demonstrate evolving best practice and compliance to the Antibiotic Manufacturing Standard. While government regulators have a role to play in promoting responsible manufacturing, the industry has shown its willingness to self-regulate by developing this manufacturing standard and independent certification scheme.

You will hear from clients on their experience with this certification, as they were the first organizations to take part in the assessment process. Companies including Centrient, Roche, Pfizer, Teva, Viatris, and Sandoz were participants in the pilot program and have helped provide technical expertise to shape the certification program.

Courtney Soulsby

Courtney Soulsby, Global Healthcare and Lifesciences Director, BSI

Courtney Soulsby works as a Global Director for the healthcare and life Sciences sector team for BSI (British Standards Institution). Working to understanding market challenges and future needs of the healthcare sector, Courtney works with key clients and industry partners to develop holistic solutions, strategies and programs. Courtney has worked with pharmaceutical industry and their supply chain for over ten years – with a deep understanding the issues with regulation, environment and sustainability concerns, compliance, and other risk exposures when manufacturing medicines.

Steve Brooks

Steve Brooks, AMR Industry Alliance

Steve Brooks currently serves as an Advisor to the Antimicrobial Resistance Industry Alliance (AMRIA), and chairs the AMRIA Manufacturing Work Group. Steve has many years of pharmaceutical industry experience. Steve led Pfizer’s Global EHS organization from 2007-2018 during which time he assumed responsibility for Business Resiliency and Environmental Sustainability for the company. In his Pfizer role, Steve was also responsible for monitoring and where appropriate, seeking to influence the external environment on EHS matters of importance to Pfizer and/or to the biopharmaceutical industry. In this capacity, Steve was a committee member of relevant trade associations and other organizations, including the AMRIA, where he played important roles especially in areas at the intersection of the environment and public health. Steve has been an advisor to the AMRIA since 2019.

Joe Muratore

Joseph Muratore is the Americas Director Product Certification for BSI, where he leads multiple teams across the Americas, bringing a unique combination of technical expertise and business acumen to the organization. Joe oversees BSI's efforts to help open world markets for Americas' manufacturers with solutions that verify product compliance to regulatory requirements, drive business performance, embed excellence and facilitate organizational resilience.

Natasha Bambridge

Natasha Bambridge has over 20 years' experience in the testing, inspection and certification industry, Natasha leads the BSI practice for Consumer Promise which enables organizations to independently verify claims which impact consumers from service excellence through to sustainability.

 

Laila Pagh-Skov

Laila Pagh-Skov, Quality Manager, Nordics Procurement - Sykehusinnkjøp HF and Chair of the Environment group in Nordic Pharmaceutical Forum

Laila Pagh-Skov works as quality manager and in this role has overall responsibility for environment and sustainability in the pharma division. She is a qualified pharmacist and has extensive experience in supply chain and pharmacy operations. She works nationally and internationally with stakeholders who can help drive the processes for a more sustainable production of antibiotics.
