Chemicals of Interest (COI)
CFATS regulates over 300 chemicals of interest (COI) as listed in Appendix A that are known to be easily weaponized. Organizations that possess any of these chemicals at, or above, the established screening threshold quantity (STQ) and concentration, are required to report this information to CISA via a secure online portal.
Industries affected
CFATS affects a wide variety of industries beyond chemical companies. This regulation applies to any facility that possesses a pre-determined threshold of any specified COI. For example, a food manufacturer utilizing multiple ammonia refrigeration units will likely be in possession of a volume of ammonia at or above the STQ for ammonia (as listed in Appendix A COI).
