Green Remediation

Green remediation has been receiving an increasing focus by USEPA and other regulatory agencies.  While previous remedial strategy development generally considered more tangible effects on human health and the environment, green remediation considers all environmental effects of remedy implementation and incorporates options to maximize the net environmental benefit of cleanup actions.  As an example, green remediation strategies consider the overall carbon footprint when comparing remedial alternatives.

By drawing on the expertise of our Sustainability Practice Area, BSI is well positioned to evaluate green remediation alternatives on behalf of our clients. The following link to the USEPA Clu-In website presents a green remediation case study for which we are extremely proud.

This project was USEPA’s “inaugural site” for their Green Remediation Focus Profiles webpage, as well as the ASTM Standard E2893, Standard Guide for Greener Cleanups (see https://www.epa.gov/greenercleanups/greener-cleanup-consensus-standard-initiative), which presents a process for reviewing green remediation Best Management Practices.

We continue to review opportunities to decrease the environmental footprint and maximize the environmental outcome throughout the life of remedial projects, from site investigations through development of cleanup alternatives and remedy design, construction, operation and monitoring.
