Patients’ roles in their own care is now increasingly important. Medical devices are already widely used in the home although the general public does not readily recognize the fact. This paper considers the implications for manufacturers when medical devices designed for trained professionals move to community use and looks at essential issues for designing devices specifically for this growing market.
