Eight steps to staying cyber-safe on vacation

The summer season means beaches, adventures, and unfortunately, a unique set of security risks for travellers.

The summer season means beaches, adventures, and unfortunately, a unique set of security risks for travellers. As you pack your bags and head off for a well-earned break, don’t just think about what swimwear and sunscreen to pack, keep on top of your digital security and help prevent a cyberattack from spoiling your fun.

Here's eight tips to keep your digital life protected before you get on that plane and while you're away.

    Pre-travelling

    - Watch out for travel scams: Fake booking sites and too-good-to-be-true holiday deals surge during summer. Research thoroughly before booking and only pay through secure, verified platforms.
    - Secure your devices before departure: Update all software and enable biometric locks like facial recognition on your devices. Consider installing tracking apps or attaching GPS tags in case of theft or loss. If traveling internationally, use radio-frequency identification (RFID)-blocking sleeves for your passport and credit cards to prevent electronic theft.
    - Travel light: Only bring the devices you absolutely need and remove sensitive data from the devices you do take. For high-risk destinations, consider taking a spare/travel phone that only contains basic information.
    - Protect physical documents: Keep digital copies of important travel documents in encrypted cloud storage, and, if you take them, guard physical documents carefully.

    While away

    - Be vigilant about public Wi-Fi networks: Resort, hotel, and restaurant Wi-Fi can be hunting grounds for cyber attackers. Avoid sensitive transactions on these networks or use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your connection.
    - Beware of rental scams: Verify property listings through multiple sources and never wire money directly to supposed property owners.
    - Keep a digital eye on home: If using smart home devices to monitor your property, ensure they're updated and secure to prevent them becoming entry points for hackers.
    - Stay vigilant at ATMs: Shield your PIN and check for skimming devices. Whenever possible, use ATMs inside bank buildings rather than on streets.

Summer should be about creating memories, not dealing with security breaches. Follow these precautions so you can focus on enjoying your break without the anxiety of being a cyberattack victim.
