Europrivacy™/® is a certification scheme developed by the European Centre for Certification and Privacy under Article 42 of the GDPR. The scheme was created to assess, document, certify, and value compliance with the GDPR and complementary data protection regulations. It is approved by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and recognized by all EU and European Economic Area (EEA) Member States.

With Europrivacy™/® certification, you have a recognized way to show that your data processing activities meet GDPR requirements. You demonstrate independent, verifiable compliance, which helps you build trust, strengthen your reputation, and support your organization’s data protection responsibilities.
Europrivacy™/® certification is designed for both data controllers and data processors. It is a strong fit for you if your organization handles personal data in the EU or if you handle personal data that must meet GDPR expectations.

Certification is especially relevant if you work in a highly regulated sector, process large volumes of personal data, or need to demonstrate trusted data protection practices. This includes large enterprises, financial and insurance organizations, healthcare providers, public sector bodies, NGOs, and other industries that rely on responsible data governance.
Europrivacy™/® certification applies to most data processing activities, including those that use emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, e‑health solutions, IoT and smart city systems. Some areas, such as biomedical data, are currently out of scope.

Under GDPR Article 42, only data processing activities can be certified. This means you can’t certify your organization or management system. 'Data processing’ refers to any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data. This can include:

You can begin with your highest‑priority activities and extend your certification as your compliance work progresses.
Your certification timeline depends on the scope and complexity of your processing activities, the number of applicable criteria, and the completeness of your evidence. The typical Europrivacy™/® certification process takes about six months and includes:

Stage 2: Audit, final report, and certificate decision

When you achieve certification, your Europrivacy™/® certificate is published in the official Europrivacy™/® Certificate Register. Each certificate is valid for a renewable period of three years, and you complete annual surveillance to maintain it.

Its implementation can satisfy many of the technological and organizational measures (TOM) required by GDPR. ISO/IEC 27701 helps establish an effective system for managing the privacy of individuals whose data you handle and supports compliance with international privacy regulations globally. Europrivacy™/® certification goes further by confirming that specific data processing activities within your organization meet GDPR requirements.
