What’s this PAS 1899 launch webinar about?

The Electric Vehicle (EV) charging experience should be a positive one for all users, including people with disabilities and older people. PAS 1899:2022 is a new specification on accessible public chargepoints for electric powered vehicles. It covers the design and placement of chargepoints, including the location spacing and surrounding environment, as well as the information, signals and indicators to be provided. This webinar will explain why accessible charging is needed; what the standard includes; and how to put it into practice.

Anne Hayes heads up the BSI Knowledge team leading the Sector strategies to ensure UK and global innovation and policy are supported with relevant standards. Having spent 19 years working within the standardization world she has experience across a broad range of industries and sectors having headed up teams for Governance, Risk and resilience as well as healthcare and Sustainability. In the recent months Anne has led the BSI Knowledge response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Previously to BSI Anne was Editorial Director at Sweet & Maxwell Ltd.

Sebastian Allan is a senior policy advisor in the Consumer Experience team at the Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles, with policy areas covering inclusive charging, chargepoint reliability, and pricing transparency.

Catherine is Head of Innovation at Motability, the national disability charity. In her role at Motability she leads on research into transport accessibility, on topics ranging from accessible EV charging to the UK market for wheelchairs. She also drives forward a number of innovative initiatives, such as a scholarships programme supporting disabled people to study transport design, setting up an Inclusive Transport Evidence Centre, and co-sponsoring the world’s first accessible EV charging standard. Catherine previously worked at the NSPCC’s Scale-up Unit, and in the Innovation Team at Independent Age, an older person’s charity. A dual UK-US national, she is passionate about making transport accessible and inclusive for all people.

Peter is the Transport Decarbonisation Lead Specialist at the professional services and engineering consultancy GHD, and he is the Technical Author for PAS 1899. He has more than 10 years of experience in sustainable transport, alternative transport fuels and related recharging and refuelling infrastructure for zero and low emission transport. He is a specialist in road transport decarbonisation, in particular for electric vehicles and associated recharging technologies, leading on projects for a wide array of public and private sector clients with client management, project and programme management and stakeholder engagement responsibilities. He has also led on a number of projects focused on the accessibility of chargepoints for disabled users. His combination of academia and public and private work experience has him uniquely placed in understanding the transport decarbonisation and sustainable transport landscape.

Catharine is Chief Executive of Designability and leads the charity to deliver its mission to enable disabled people to live with greater independence. In post for 4 years now, she has led the charity to expand its impact, by engaging more disabled people with its existing services, preparing a new product for disabled parents for launch, and leading the partnership with Motability the charity to ensure that over a million disabled drivers can transition to electric vehicles through more accessible charging infrastructure.

Catharine’s experience spans both the private sector, where she held leadership positions in marketing for many well known brands, and more recently the charity sector. Prior to her role at Designability, as a consultant, she helped over 25 national charities expand their reach. Catharine is also a trustee on the board of ActionAid UK, the international development charity.

Keir lead Designability’s research and product design activity on the ‘accessible public EV charging’ project funded by Motability, the Charity.

He has over 15 years’ experience working directly with disabled people to understand their needs, expectations and ambitions. He says ‘’Designability’s human-centred design approach is critical to ensure people’s needs are met in the delivery of new product or service design solutions’’.

Keir has a real passion for products that are highly usable for all people and deliver a positive user experience.

Nick Fleming is Head of Transport and Mobility Standards at BSI (British Standards Institution) and programme lead on the CAV standards programme supported by UK government (CCAV). Nick has over 10 years’ experience in standardization working across emerging technologies and with the automotive and transport industry to develop both national and international standards that support adoption of new technologies, promote innovation, safety, security and consumer protection.
