Tim McGarr is the Sector Lead for the Digital area within Knowledge Solutions in BSI. Tim has specific responsibility for the direction and development of key digital standards areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Virtual/Augmented Reality. Tim has been working at BSI since 2009. Prior to BSI, Tim he spent 5 years working in the legal publisher LexisNexis in the strategy department. Before this, Tim he worked as a management consultant for Logica (now CGI) and an internal consultant for BT. Tim has an MBA from HEC in Paris, France.

Dr George Economides FCIHT: George started his career in the world of formula E and rapid prototyping, before leading a spin out SME into the smart mobility space. Between 2017 and 2021 he led the Future of Mobility Team at Oxfordshire County Council, managing over 30 innovation projects in areas such as autonomous vehicles, drones, active travel, cybersecurity and policy evaluation. In 2021, he joined DfT to head the national Transport Research and Innovation Board (TRIB), under the office of the Chief Scientific Advisor. He currently serves as the DfT Head of Autonomy and AI technologies.

Steph is a data science enthusiast with specific experience of the healthcare domain. She has a diverse background ranging from astrophysics to genomics in academia and film & TV to dance in the arts and the third sector. She joined The Data Lab, Scotland’s innovation centre for data and AI, in 2017 to lead on the delivery of a project involving innovation with data to improve cancer care in Scotland. A project and programme management professional, she loves to develop and build collaborations across organisations to help people with their data/AI journey!

Steph led on the Data Lab’s efforts in support of the Scottish Government in developing Scotland’s national AI Strategy and she’s now excited to lead on delivering the strategy’s vision for Scotland to be a leader in the development and use of trustworthy, ethical and inclusive AI.

Steph is passionate advocate for STEM for all and firmly believes that technology should be for the benefit of all.

Daniel Hulme (PhD) is a leading expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, and is the CEO of Satalia. Satalia is an award-winning company that provides AI products and solutions for global companies such as Tesco and PwC. Satalia's mission is to create a world where everyone is free to innovate and that those innovations become free for everyone.

Daniel is also the Chief AI Officer for WPP and helps define, identify, curate and promote AI capability and new opportunities for the benefit of the wider group and society.

Having received a Master and Doctorate in AI at UCL, Daniel is also UCL's Computer Science Entrepreneur in Residence and a lecturer at LSE's Marshall Institute, focused on using AI to solve business and social problems.

Passionate about how technology can be used to govern organisations and bring positive social impact, Daniel is a popular keynote speaker specialising in the topics of AI, ethics, technology, innovation, decentralization and organisational design. He is a serial speaker for Google and TEDx, holds an international Kauffman Global Entrepreneur Scholarship, and is a faculty member of Singularity University.

Daniel is a contributor to numerous books, podcasts and articles on AI and the future of work. His mission is to create a world where everyone has the freedom to spawn and contribute to innovations, and have those innovations become free to everyone. He has advisory and executive positions across companies and governments, and actively promotes purposeful entrepreneurship and technology innovation across the globe.

Dr David Leslie is the Director of Ethics and Responsible Innovation Research at the Alan Turing Institute. He is the author of the UK Government’s official guidance on the responsible design and implementation of AI systems in the public sector, Understanding artificial intelligence ethics and safety (2019) and a principal co-author of Explaining decisions made with AI (2020), a co-badged guidance on AI explainability published by the Information Commissioner’s Office and the Alan Turing Institute. He was a Principal Investigator and lead author of the NESTA-funded Ethics review of machine learning in children’s social care (2020) and is now Principal Investigator of a UKRI-funded project called PATH-AI: Mapping an Intercultural Path to Privacy, Agency and Trust in Human-AI Ecosystems, which is a research collaboration with RIKEN, one of Japan’s National Research and Development Institutes founded in 1917, as well as of a BEIS and GPAI funded research project entitled Advancing Data Justice Research and Practice. David is also a co-author of Mind the gap: how to fill the equality and AI accountability gap in an automated world (2020), the Final Report of the Institute for the Future of Work’s Equality Task Force and lead author of “Does AI stand for augmenting inequality in the COVID-19 era of healthcare” (2021) published in the British Medical Journal. He is additionally the lead author of Artificial intelligence, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law (2021), a primer prepared to support the CAHAI’s Feasibility Study and translated into Dutch and French. His other recent publications include the Harvard Data Science Review (HDSR) article, “Tackling COVID-19 through responsible AI innovation: Five steps in the right direction,” (2020), Understanding bias in facial recognition technologies: An explainer (2020), and “The Arc of the Data Scientific Universe,” (2021) also published in the HDSR. 

Before joining the Turing, David taught at Princeton’s University Center for Human Values (UCHV), where he also participated in the UCHV’s 2017-2018 research collaboration with Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy on “Technology Ethics, Political Philosophy and Human Values: Ethical Dilemmas in AI Governance.” Prior to teaching at Princeton, David held academic appointments at Yale’s programme in Ethics, Politics and Economics and at Harvard’s Committee on Degrees in Social Studies, where he received over a dozen teaching awards including the 2014 Stanley Hoffman Prize for Teaching Excellence. He now serves as an elected member of the 9-person Bureau of the Council of Europe’s Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAHAI). He is on the editorial board of the Harvard Data Science Review and is a founding editor of the Springer journal, AI and Ethics.

Maria is a globally recognised, award winning AI ethics expert, public policy contributor, a member of various Advisory Boards - UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI  (APPG AI) ,ORBIT & SKEMA AI Institute, Vice Chair of techUK Data and AI leadership committee and member of BSI/ISO & IEEE AI standard groups. She is a passionate advocate for children rights in the age of AI, serving as member of the Advisory Board for UNICEF #AI4Children and World Economic Forum Generation AI programmes. Maria is PwC Responsible AI lead, managing the company's efforts in deploying responsible AI and data across the UK business, its operations and clients.

Sue McLean is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Data and Technology group and vice chair of the Society for Computers and Law. Sue specialises in technology and had been advising on technology projects for over 20 years. She advises clients (both customers and vendors) on a wide range of technology matters, including outsourcing, cloud, digital transformation, technology procurement, development and licensing and digital commerce. Sue advises clients on the legal issues relating to the implementation of new technologies, with a particular focus on AI, FinTech and blockchain/DLT.  Sue's clients include some of the world's best known tech companies and multinational corporations, plus emerging and growth companies. Sue regularly speaks and writes about the impact of disruptive technologies and is one of the Firm’s Innovation Reinvent Ambassadors.

Sam Hill is CTO, VP of Technology at WildBrain, an industry-leading kids’ content and brands company that serves the global market – with over 300million subscribers to its VOD channels 1 in 3 kids watch WildBrain content.

Sam leads the team of Data Scientists, Data Analysts and Software Engineers maximising the use of AI and ML techniques to understand the audiences and ensures future content continues to allow imagination to run wild.

Sam has over 25 years’ experience in all aspects of software creation – including having previously been the Head of Software Engineering at the BBC; and spent 9 years in Retail at both Tesco and M&S at some point Sam has designed and built a system to solve most challenges.

Ivana Bartoletti is the Global Data Privacy Officer at Wipro, the leading international information technology, consulting and business process services company.

Ivana is an internationally recognised thought leader in the fields of privacy, data protection and responsible technology. She has many years of experience working for large organizations in privacy policy, strategy and programmes related to digital transformation, cloud and automation. The Cyber Security Awards named her Woman of the Year (2019).

As a Visiting Policy Fellow at the University of Oxford, her research focuses on how to advance the global sharing of information in the context of privacy, security, data protection and human rights.

Ivana is co-editor of The AI Book, a handbook for investors, entrepreneurs and fintech visionaries and is author of An Artificial Revolution, on Power, Politics and AI.She is founder of the influential Women Leading in AI network. A sought-after subject expert, Ivana is interviewed frequently in the mainstream media and speaks at many international events. An interview about her book is available here.

David Cuckow is responsible for the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB) global strategy on all things digital, supporting cross-sector industries and government stakeholders to innovate by accelerating the adoption of digital technologies, identifying and codifying best practice in order to transform and improve business, process and culture for both social and economic benefit. Previous roles include Director and leadership positions at SAS, CA, Nortel, Alcatel and Racal.

Detlef Nauck is the Head of AI & Data Science Research for BT’s Applied Research Division located at Adastral Park, Ipswich, UK. Detlef has over 30 years of experience in AI and Machine Learning and leads a programme spanning the work of a large team of international researchers who develop capabilities underpinning modern AI systems.

A key part of Detlef’s work is to establish best practices in Data Science and Machine Learning for conducting data analytics professionally and responsibly. Detlef has a keen interest in AI Ethics and Explainable AI to tackle bias and to increase transparency and accountability in AI.

Detlef is a computer scientist by training and holds a PhD and a Postdoctoral Degree (Habilitation) in Machine Learning and Data Analytics. He is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University and a Private Docent at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, Germany. He has published 3 books, over 120 papers, and holds over 20 AI patents.

Philip Dawson is Policy Lead at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. He is a lawyer and public policy advisor specializing in the governance of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI).  Phil has held senior policy roles at a United Nations standards agency, in government and at a global AI software company. As an independent advisor he has worked with international organizations, national governments, research and advocacy organizations, non-profits and private companies on a range of AI policy issues, including responsible AI, global governance, AI and human rights, and certification for AI. 

Phil is a leader in national data and AI standards efforts in Canada. He is also an active member of the OECD.AI Network of Experts, a member of the UN Global Pulse Expert Group on the Governance of Data and AI and a former member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on the Future of Human Rights and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. 

Phil is a former Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, where his research focused on the human rights implications of algorithmic impact assessments. A licensed attorney, Phil holds a B.A. from McGill University, an M.Sc. in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economic and a joint B.C.L. / LL.B. from McGill University.

Milan is a member of Microsoft’s corporate standards group. He chairs BSI’s committee on Artificial Intelligence which has a broad and growing membership. The committee mirrors the ISO/IEC JTC1 subcommittee on AI and the CEN/CENELEC joint technical committee on AI. Milan is also an active contributor to international standards work on information security and data privacy.

Florian Ostmann is Head of AI Governance and Regulatory Innovation within the Turing's public policy programme. His work focuses on regulation and non-regulatory governance mechanisms related to data and AI as well as on the use of data science and AI to facilitate the work of regulatory bodies. His broader research interests include the ethical implications of emerging technologies, the use of data science and AI to address societal challenges, health policy, and corporate responsibility (with a focus on business and human rights). Recent work led by Florian includes a report examining questions of responsible AI innovation in financial services (commissioned by the Financial Conduct Authority) and a project on the use of data to address modern slavery risks in the investment context. 

Florian serves on the Royal Statistical Society’s Data Science Section Committee and contributed to the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems as a member of the Initiative’s Law Committee. In previous roles, he worked at the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, as a consultant on autonomous vehicle policy, social impact measurement, and responsible investing, and for the Pan American Health Organization. Florian holds a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a PhD in Political Philosophy and MA in Legal and Political Theory from University College London.

Sophia Ignatidou is Group Manager for Technology Policy at the UK’s independent data protection authority, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). She has been leading on AI policy, advising international and domestic stakeholders, representing the ICO at the Global Privacy Assembly and the Algorithmic Processing workstream of the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum (DRCF).

Ghazi Ahamat is a Team Lead at the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI), an expert team within the UK government that works on enabling responsible innovation in AI and data driven technologies. 

Ghazi leads the CDEI's work on AI Assurance, including the role of Standards, Regulation and International organisations. He was previously a co-author of the CDEI's Review into Bias in Algorithmic Decision Making.

Ghazi previously  founded the Victorian Centre for Data Insights, a state government central analytics team in Australia, and as a consultant with BCG he advised governments in Australia and the Middle East on Data Science, Strategy and Transformation.

He has a Masters in Technology Policy (with Distinction) at  the University of Cambridge, where he focused on the policy and strategic implications of AI. He also studied Economics and Pure Mathematics at the University of Melbourne.

Anna Felländer is one of Sweden’s leading experts on the effects of digitalization on organisations, society and the economy. She has long been passionate about making meaning from data. As Head of Financial Analysis at the crisis management office of the Prime Minister of Sweden during the financial crisis of 2008, Anna learned that a multidisciplinary perspective can uncover insights and concealed patterns that traditional statistics can’t. Later, as an advisor to the Swedish government and as the Chief Economist at Swedbank, her key research analysed the hidden values of digitalization from an economic, societal and business perspective.

It was in 2016 that Anna realised artificial intelligence technology (AI) was becoming the new general-purpose technology: a technology that would drastically impact the economy, businesses, people and society at-large. At the same time, she noticed that AI was also causing a negative externality — a new type of digital pollution. Consumers have opted in to receive the benefit of digitalization, but are simultaneously facing a dark cloud of bias, discrimination and lost autonomy that businesses needed to be held accountable for. In the traditional environmental sustainability model, organisations are held accountable for physical negative externalities, such as air or water pollution, by outraged consumers and sanctions handed down by regulators. Yet no one was holding technology companies accountable for the negative externalities — the digital pollution — of their AI technology. Regulators have had difficulties interpreting AI in order to appropriately regulate it and customers didn’t understand how their data was being used in the black box of AI algorithms.

Anna’s multidisciplinary research group at the Royal Institute of Technology was the origin to anch.AI. Anna founded anch.AI in 2018 to investigate the ethical, legal and societal ramifications of AI. The anch.AI platform is an insight engine with a unique methodology for screening, assessing, mitigating, auditing and reporting exposure to ethical risk in AI solutions. anch.AI believes that all organisations must conform to their ethical values and comply with existing and upcoming regulation in their AI solutions, creating innovations that humans can trust. It is an ethical insurance for companies and organisations.

Juan Mateos-Garcia is Director of Data Analytics at Nesta, he leads a team of data engineers, data scientists, data visualisation developers, policy experts and ethicists using data analytics to advance Nesta’s missions.

Juan has ten years of experience using novel data and methods to inform policy. He has led high-impact projects in partnership with the European Commission, BEIS, Innovate UK and Scottish and Wales’ Government and presented his research at MIT, Stanford University, the Santa Fe Institute, the OECD and NBER.

Juan is interested in how data analytics techniques such as machine learning can be combined with other methods to achieve social impact, in how scientific research and innovation are being transformed by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, and in the role of policy in ensuring that these emerging technologies evolve in directions consistent with the public interest and conducive towards a fairer society.
Juan is an Economist with a MSc in Science and Technology Policy (with distinction) from SPRU (University of Sussex).

Stuart is Head of Department for Data Science at the National Physical Laboratory, a world-leading National Measurement Institute (NMI), based at the Internationally recognised NMI facility in Teddington, Middlesex. Further information regarding the outstanding work carried out within Data Science and the excellent facilities they possess can be found on the NPL website, http://www.npl.co.uk. The Data Science team are world experts in their field.

He graduated in 2003 with a first-class honours MChem (four-year course with one-year Industrial Placement at Johnson Matthey Royston) from the University of Hull. Stuart gained his Post-Graduate Certificate in Education in 2006 and my PhD in 2008, from the University of Hull. He is an organic chemist by training, with a deep understanding of liquid crystalline organic semiconductor synthesis for materials science application. Stuart was extremely fortunate during my PhD research to work at one of the most significant and well respected liquid crystal research departments in the world.

In 2009 Stuart was fortunate to become the first employee of a University spin-out company, Polar OLED, taking the role of technical lead, funded by one of the UKs largest and most well-respected university venture capital investors, IP Group Plc. Polar OLED utilised University of Hull IP, looking to revolutionise the way that a new generation of display technology could be manufactured. They worked on Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) displays, using print-based solution processing methods. Stuart is very proud of what they achieved in the eight years he spent with Polar, significant growth, exceptional research, many publications and patent filings and successful grant applications.

Sanjay Khanna is a strategic advisor and foresight expert. Previously the futurist at global law firm Baker McKenzie, today Sanjay works with organizations to illuminate risks and opportunities associated with the converging crises of geopolitical fragmentation, socioeconomic reordering, population health issues, technological acceleration, environmental and climate change. Sanjay has been interviewed by the Financial Times, Globe and Mail, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, among others, and has testified at the Canadian House of Commons' Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics (ETHI) on potential uses and impacts of facial recognition technology. Sanjay is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science at McMaster University, and is a Guest Lecturer, Researcher, Associate and Project Partner with the Liveable Planet Challenge Lab at the Royal College of Art, the world's number one art and design university.
