On the road to completely autonomous vehicles, vehicle cybersecurity has become crucially important, both to protect vehicles and to provide the marketplace with confidence. In response, BS ISO/SAE 21434 Road vehicles — Cybersecurity engineering will be a significant new standard.

It talks about embedding cyber security throughout the supply chain, from chip designers and software developers to electronic and electrical component manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers. The standard is also cited in UNECE WP29 vehicle type approval regulations, making it a requirement for the industry to comply with it as part of vehicle type approval.

This webinar aims to increase the sector’s understanding of BS ISO/SAE 21434 and its obligations to implement it, as well as covering the wider context of future vehicle cybersecurity.

Alex Price has been a Standards Development Manager for BSI for over 20 years.  In the last 5 years involved in standards relevant to the automotive industry.  From functional safety standards ISO 26262 to physical testing standards dealing with vehicle homologation.  The standards development process to achieve consensus and development is a viable route for industries wanting to demonstrate levels of conformity. He will present how accelerating innovation through cooperation and consensus in automotive standards is achievable.

Current employment as Technical Director for Autac Products Limited, a UK based manufacturer of electrical cable, specialising in spiral electrical cables.

Previous employment included working as Sales Director then as Managing Director for Autac Products for over 30 years.

Nick Russell is a Technical Director of Standards at BlackBerry UK Ltd. with over 20 years of experience in the area of standardisation and over five years in the area of cybersecurity. Most recently he worked on the development of the international standard for cybersecurity engineering for road vehicles, ISO/SAE 21434, where he co-chaired a sub-group on the post-development aspects of vehicle cybersecurity. He also was involved in the UNECE WP.29 GRVA CS/OTA IWG regulatory committee where he assisted with international automotive cybersecurity and software update regulations (UN R155 and UN R156, respectively).

Nick is currently co-chairing an ISO Task Force looking at harmonisation aspects of ISO/SAE 21434 with other international standards (most notably ISO 26262, function safety), as well as actively contributing to the work on enhancing the Cybersecurity Assurance Level scheme of ISO/SAE 21434 and the development of the international standard on road vehicle software update engineering (ISO 24089).

Nick has previously worked in the area of mobile telephony standards where he led numerous efforts in the 3GPP and the GSMA on topics relating to 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G. Nick holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from De Montfort University.

Paul Wooderson is Chief Engineer and leads the cybersecurity team at HORIBA MIRA. He is a Chartered Engineer with 20 years’ experience in embedded systems security in the automotive and previously smartcard domains.

Paul's responsibilities include cybersecurity engineering R&D, consultancy, testing and assessment. He is a UK Expert to the international ISO and UNECE working groups developing new standards and regulations for cybersecurity engineering and software updates for road vehicles. He has played a lead role in the recent cybersecurity-related collaborative research projects ResiCAV, 5StarS and UK CITE, and has several publications on side channel attacks and automotive cybersecurity engineering.

Stephen is an innovative systems and software engineer with a passion for improving the way we create complex systems. Before starting his PhD full time, he ran my own consultancy, Omflow Limited, specialising in requirements-led engineering for international businesses. Omflow was actively engaged in research with multiple university partners, focusing on improving how global teams work together to deliver complex, high-integrity systems.

Since studying Electronic and Computer Engineering to Master's level in Leeds and Germany, Stephen’s multifaceted, international career has taken him on a fascinating journey. After a period programming Formula 1 car control systems, he took a sabbatical travelling the world that culminated in him guiding customers in whitewater rafts down a 7-metre waterfall. Stephen has also developed automated gearbox systems for a German Tier 1 automotive supplier, before launching a technical language services business catering to engineering companies in German-speaking countries. A return to active engineering saw him developing processes and tools for the UK powertrain research centre of a major Chinese carmaker. Stephen’s experiences here informed his decision to launch Omflow to provide international businesses with a holistic approach to reducing the costs and risks of complex projects in multilingual environments.

Harman graduated as an Electrical and Electronic engineer in 1995 and has worked in the industry now for 26 years. Starting out with Texas Instruments as an FPGA Field Application Engineer and then developed his main career with Hitachi/Renesas, contributing to the development of innovative processes and designs. Harman has participated in the complete engineering cycle from concept specification through to device and application-level testing. He has the privilege to set up and lead activities covering Independent RTL/Design verification, uCBIC/ASIC design and Smartcard development working with international teams. From 2011, Harman focused to Cybersecurity development targeting the Automotive and Industrial segment. From 2015 he had the opportunity to take an active role in the development of the first cybersecurity automotive standard, ISO/SAE21434 that was successfully released in August this year and working with experts across the world has further deepened his interest in this important area. Outside of engineering Harman has a keen interest in listening and producing music.
