The ISO/IEC 42001 pre-certification assessment provides a high-level overview of an organization’s AI Management System (AIMS) maturity and functionality. It also offers insight into the formal audit process and the expected standard of evidence, enabling the organization to prepare for certification more effectively than any other approach.
Conducting an ISO/IEC 42001 gap analysis before undergoing formal ISO/IEC 42001 certification is not a mandatory requirement. However, completing a gap analysis offers significant advantages, including verifying that the organisation is mature, compliant, and fully prepared for the formal ISO/IEC 42001 audit and certification process.

Set the stage for a successful ISO/IEC 42001 certification by identifying gaps early, aligning teams on AI governance, and prioritizing high-impact improvements - saving time, reducing costs, and strengthening your AI Management System before the formal audit.
The purpose of a pre-certification assessment is to evaluate the scope, readiness, and capability for an ISO/IEC 42001 certification audit. It does not include consultation or guidance on implementing an AI Management System in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001 requirements. Each client location or certification structure is permitted only one pre-certification assessment. To support organizations during implementation, BSI offers the Associate Consultants Programme (ACP) for ISO/IEC 42001.
Based on experience and client feedback, a two-day assessment has proven to be the most cost-effective duration for most organizations. If you require a shorter or longer ISO/IEC 42001 pre-certification assessment, please inform the BSI Regulatory Services AI team during your enquiry or application, and we will gladly assist in determining the best approach for your needs.
The ISO/IEC 42001 pre-certification assessment can be tailored to focus on specific areas or take a broader view. It evaluates the organization’s change management processes, risk assessment, approval procedures, and implementation plans to ensure alignment with ISO/IEC 42001 requirements. The assessment also clarifies what evidence will satisfy the documentation requirements of a formal audit and assesses how the organization’s current AI Management System measures against the standards for ISO/IEC 42001 certification.
The ISO/IEC 42001 pre-certification assessment equips an organization with the information needed to develop, test, and document corrective actions for any non-compliance issues that could otherwise delay or obstruct certification.

Organizations can maximise the value of their ISO/IEC 42001 pre-certification assessment by preparing in advance a description of their AI system(s) under the draft AIMS scope, a list of services with descriptions, a Statement of Applicability, a list of sites with addresses and activities, their AI policy and objectives, and the AI Management System Manual along with drafts of relevant procedures, policies, and work instructions.
