Report highlights

  • The secondary impacts of COVID-19: risk ratings for health incidents, safety incidents, IT/telecom outages and cyber-attack all increased significantly on previous years
  • The biggest consequence of previous disruptions was staff morale and wellbeing
  • COVID-19’s legacy has meant practitioners are considering new risks in 2021
  • Climate risk is now the primary medium- to long-term risk for many organizations
  • The number of organizations performing longer-term trend analysis has risen to an all-time high of 81.3% - with over half now carrying it out on a centralized basis

Top considerations

  • Plan for the unexpected: Non-occupational disease moved from second from bottom in 2019 to the top of the previous disruption index this year because of COVID-19
  • Prioritize people: Health incidents and safety incidents were the second and third biggest disruptions, yet are in 8th and 15th place for future threats
  • Think beyond your own operations: Supply chain disruption is anticipated as a greater threat in the year ahead
  • Look ahead with optimism: Business continuity programmes are becoming more mature and continue to receive good investment
