Greenhouse gases are a form of pollution impacting our environment and climate. They are emitted as a result of a wide range of activities, which for organizations can happen throughout the value chain. The GHG Protocol has broken the sources down into three categories:

Scope 1 are direct GHG emissions from sources controlled or owned by an organization, such as fuel used in vehicles.

Scope 2 are indirect GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heating, and cooling.
