What are the changes to ISO 14001?

The published ISO 14001:2026 standard sets out both refinements & new priorities. Some updates are editorial; others expand existing concepts.

ISO 14001:2026 includes some editorial changes, updating references, restructuring, renumbering minor changes and points of clarification. This includes the use of 'results' as the term used for the output of a process, such as management review, or intended outcome of an objective.

‘Outcome’ remains the relevant term when considering the whole EMS.

We see a shift in terminology to include changing the term fulfilment to meeting in reference to the compliance obligations.
In addition to minor editorial changes, Clause 4 of ISO 14001:2026 is now the requirement life cycle perspective (LCP) when setting the EMS scope.

This is in addition to considering LCP for environmental aspects and operational controls, to ensure that upstream and downstream impacts the organization can control, or influence, are not overlooked.
ISO 14001:2026 requires top management to now support all relevant roles and not just management roles, extending the level of personal involvement, responsibility and accountability.
ISO 14001:2026 introduces a new requirement ‘Planning and managing of changes’, that requires organizations to determine the need, and to plan and manage changes that affect or can affect the intended outcomes of the EMS. The need for change to the EMS can be identified from internal or external sources.

Additionally, when determining what environmental aspects need to be considered, the requirement has changed from identifying reasonably foreseeable emergency situations to identifying all potential emergency situations.
Clause 7 of ISO/FDIS 14001:2026 introduces only minor adjustments, primarily focused on terminology updates.

Your organization should ensure alignment with changes in terminology, but overall operational impact will be minimal.
ISO 14001:2026 includes that the organization’s controlling or influencing of outsourced processes are now limited to those relevant to the intended outcomes of the EMS, now termed as ‘external provided processes, products or services`.

An additional change is that emergency situations (ES) will be identified when considering ‘risks and opportunities’ and not just environmental aspects, so that all eventualities, or potential ES are identified.
The effectiveness of the environmental management system is fundamental to this clause and is now included in the first sentence. There is a new requirement expected that each internal audit shall have defined objective(s).

In addition to these changes, Clause 9 is expected to include terminology and editorial changes with minor operational impact. Information requirements for the management review are now more definitive and 'shall' be included.
Clause 10 of ISO 14001:2026 introduces only minor adjustments, primarily focused on terminology updates with minimal operational impact.
