The BSI Kitemark™ for Electric Vehicle Charging

Product certification and testing of EV supply equipment

With electric vehicles becoming the norm on our roads rather than the exception, growth in the market for charging products to keep them moving is accelerating.

BSI has launched a Kitemark for Electric Vehicle Charging, the first time this emerging industry has had the opportunity to provide confidence and assurance through accreditation.

Electric vehicle charging is fast evolving with new players entering the industry globally but – until now – with little or no guidance on safety and quality.

That’s why BSI, with more than a century of trusted expertise in product certification and testing behind us, has created this new Kitemark.

What is it?

The Kitemark and IECEE CB Scheme certification and testing of electric vehicle charging systems will support market assurance amidst the rapid expansion and technological advancement in electric vehicles and their associated systems.

The Kitemark will complement BSI’s existing Electric Vehicle charging standards (for example, BS EN 61851 series). It will employ type testing, factory assessments, certification and ongoing activities. It will require ongoing factory assessments, which will be delivered by our expert systems certification team.

The launch coincides with a milestone in electric driving with UK roads expected to make way for one million electric vehicles by the end of 2020. Charging infrastructure to support this growth will need to expand fivefold. Innovation is prevalent, with 48 manufacturers offering 567 different products and new players entering the market globally.

Routes to market add further complexity, with manufacturer-owned public charging points, network providers enabling charging at service stations and consumer in-home installations via utilities, leasing companies and car manufacturers.

What are the benefits?

Companies achieving accreditation under BSI’s Electric Vehicle Charging Kitemark will differentiate themselves, creating standout in a complex market.

Organisations required to make purchasing decisions on these systems – such as local authorities – will welcome the assurance the Kitemark will bring.

Market growth at this speed requires independent market assurance and our Kitemark is key to developing wide scale acceptance of quality and safety.
