Our energy system is changing. There is now more low-carbon generation than ever before and this will only continue to increase with the climate change targets and net zero commitment.

Most renewables produce different amounts of electricity depending on factors like the time of day or the weather. In order to maximize the use of intermittent renewables and to ease the burden on the network, flexibility will become an integral part of the low-carbon grid of the future.  The grid of the future will need to be smart, provide flexibility and, most of all, it will need to be low-carbon.

John Parsons, Director Digital of BEAMA

• John Parsons has a long and varied career in the energy industry. He has been at BEAMA since 2003, and in January 2019 he became BEAMA Director Digital as well as covering the T&D sector. John is Chair of BSI L/13 Smart Energy Coordination Committee and member as well as BSI L/001 Electrotechnical sector - Policy and strategy committee.

With the global movement towards net-zero the way we generate, distribute and manage energy is changing. With more renewables coming onto the grid everyday engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions.

Energy storage can help address the intermittency of solar and wind power; respond quickly to fluctuations in demand, thus making the grid more responsive and flexible.

Anthony Price, Managing Director of Swanbarton

• Anthony founded Swanbarton in 2003 to deliver energy storage solutions, having previously worked for National Power and Innogy. His experience includes developing commercialization plans with battery manufacturers, market analysis for power and network companies, and energy storage project development. Anthony also initiated the UK’s industry group for electricity storage and runs the annual International Flow Battery Forum.
