Helping UK government to increase uptake of BIM technologies

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has huge benefits for the built environment sector, such as improving accuracy, efficiency and safety. UK Government wanted to propel the adoption of BIM in the market by providing knowledge and guidance that would support its use.

BSI carried out a six-year work programme to create standards, knowledge and implement principles to provide certification at national and international scale to support the BIM journey. As a Government BIM Task Group partner, BSI helped to:

• Plan a six-year roadmap for adoption of BIM at government and industry level
• Create a sustainable BIM Community and form a BIM task group made up of industry, government, public sector and academia
• Lead a series of workshops with industry and government figures to develop multiple reports
• Create a three-step benefits realization programme for key BIM products, including discovery, development and early adopter stages for insights and feedback

In addition, BSI also:

• Developed the first UK BIM standard and delivered BIM training and workshops
• Created industry services and products such as the BIM certification and kitemark
• Partnered with CDBB and UK BIM Alliance on ukbimframework.org
