The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching impacts on the global automotive economy. It is currently estimated that light vehicle production will fall 20% in 2020, though this forecast could change depending on when global lockdown restrictions are eased and whether further lockdowns are deemed necessary by Governments around the world.

In anticipation of lockdown restrictions being gradually lifted, the automotive sector will face a number of challenges as it seeks to reopen and rebuild. These are likely to include getting the workforce back to work safely, getting facilities post-COVID-19-ready, and securing resilient and robust supply chains. Organizations will also be keen to increase resilience of their operations as they move forward through the recovery phase and beyond.

Following the publication of Revision 5 of IATFs Global Waivers and Measures in Response to the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) on 31 October 2020, BSI is now able to offer IATF 16949 audits remotely, using proven methods and tools, in approved circumstances.

Subject to eligibility criteria, BSI can audit remotely, helping IATF 16949 clients who successfully complete their audit to retain certification at this critical time.

In addition, it may be possible to retain certification of your other Management Systems; for example, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management, ISO 50001 Energy Management, ISO / IEC 27001 Information Security Management, and others, via BSI Remote Audits.

As manufacturers gear up to reopen their plants, the health, safety and wellbeing of the workforce will be front of mind. There are a number of measures that can be taken to help minimize the risk of infection and support wellbeing, including health and safety management, workplace hygiene and the implementation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management is designed to reduce the risks of work-related ill-health (and injury) and to provide safe and healthy work environments. It provides good practice in health and safety risk management, which, if implemented correctly, will help organizations protect their workers.

In addition to navigating a new Health and Safety landscape, the automotive sector is now also navigating a range of hygiene challenges.
