What is BSI Kitemark certification for Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) devices?

The BSI Kitemark for UVGI devices is a prestigious certification award for manufacturers of these products. Achieving certification provides trust and confidence to cover the following aspects of this type of product including:

  • Electrical safety of the specific product or device
  • Photobiological safety of the light source
  • Evaluation of the emission of ozone (if applicable to the product)

Products that can be certified under this scheme can include those for consumer, retail or industrial applications as well as devices installed into Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.

How do I achieve BSI Kitemark certification for Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) devices?

Certification consists of initial testing and assessment of your quality management system as well as ongoing assessments to maintain the Kitemark certification.

During the first stage we will carry out type testing of the products to be certified. For example, these tests will examine the electrical safety elements of the product as well photobiological testing and ozone testing (if relevant). Your will also need to submit a full set of circuit diagrams and part lists which will be reviewed.

Examples of the standards which can be applied to his certification scheme include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Air: IEC 60335-2-65 (Electric air-clearing devices)
  • Water: IEC 60335-2-109 (UV radiation water treatment appliances)
  • Surface: IEC 60598-2-8 (Handlamps and similar portable luminaires) | IEC 62368-1 (Audio, video, information and communication technology and business and office machines)
  • Safety: IEC 62471 (Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems. Note - this is a safety standard not performance.)

Then on an ongoing basis we carry out sample testing of the products as well as assessments of your manufacturing / production facility to ensure it is controlled by the implementation of a quality management system such as or based on ISO 9001.

This ongoing element is an essential component of any Kitemark certification scheme. It’s a robust process that helps ensure standards are maintained so you can continue to differentiate your products and display the BSI Kitemark, the ultimate Mark of Trust, on them.
