What’s this webinar about?

The third chase-the-sun OH&S webinar on Day One in this series will be a wide-ranging discussion on the accessibility and inclusivity of OH&S standards. The development process seeks to be as transparent as possible, so in this session the people who write the international OH&S standards are asking you: Are they protecting everyone and are there ways to make them more inclusive? Does the ISO 45000 family of standards currently work for non-traditional business models? Do the standards give enough direction to ensure the needs of all types of workers are taken into account? Is the language right for all types of users?

17:25 How to get involved

Sally is BSI’s Lead Standards Development Manager for business improvement and occupational health and safety management. She is responsible for working with both national and international experts to develop documents that help organizations of all types to improve the way they operate and to better protect the people who work for them.

Sally engages with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure the widest possible views are taken into account when the UK inputs to international standards and frequently holds public meetings to encourage users of the standards to raise issues and propose improvements.

Sally is the manager  of the ISO technical committee responsible for the world’s first international standard on occupational health and safety management, ISO 45001, and is actively involved in the development of ISO 45003 (guidance on psychological health and safety at work) which will also be the first globally agreed standard of its type.

Martin Cottam is an engineering risk management specialist.  He began his career in the nuclear industry, undertaking risk assessment and safety case preparation, before joining Lloyd’s Register, one of the world’s leading providers of professional services for engineering and technology – focused on improving safety and increasing the performance of critical infrastructures world-wide.  There, over almost 31 years, he undertook risk assessment and safety management projects across many major hazard industries, and held a variety of roles, spending the last 6 years as Group Technical Assurance and Quality Director, with overall responsibility for quality management and technical governance across the organisation.

Martin is a member of BSI’s Management Systems Expert Group.  He has contributed to the development of several OHS standards including OHSAS 18001, and to the ISO 55000 series on Asset Management.  He chaired the BSI mirror committee throughout the development of ISO 45001, leading the UK delegation on the ISO 45001 project committee.  He now chairs the ISO technical committee for occupational health and safety management (ISO/TC 283) and is convenor of the ISO task force on the future of ISO management system standards.

Katrin Behnke is Standardisation Officer at the ETUC, the European Trade Union Confederation. She is part of the ETUC STAND project, which has been set up in 2015 to strengthen the participation of trade unions in the standardisation process. Within this project, Katrin coordinates the ETUC participation in various European and international standardisation committees such as ISO/TC 283 ‘Occupational Health & Safety management’, ISO/TC 260 ‘Human resource management’ and ISO/TC 309 ‘Governance of organisations’. She has extensive knowledge of the European standardisation system and is familiar with civil society issues. Before she started at the ETUC, Katrin worked at ANEC, the European consumer voice in standardisation, on issues covering services, sustainability and energy. Katrin holds a master’s degree in Environmental and Resource Economics from the University of Bonn, Germany, and Wageningen, Netherlands.

Mr. Seymour worked as a consultant and contractor for US OSHA since 1979, joined the Agency as an employee in 1999 and retired in 2012.  As the first Director of OSHA’s Office of Technological Feasibility and Acting Deputy Director of OSHA’s Directorate of Standards and Guidance.  As the project manager for the Injury and Illness Prevention Program standard, Mr. Seymour led a large interdisciplinary team from throughout OSHA in drafting the standard and supporting preamble as well as developed innovative guidance products. Since 2000. Mr. Seymour has been a member of the ANSI Z10 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) Standards Development Committee and Chair of the Small Business Subcommittee.  He is a member of the US Technical Advisory Group for ISO TC 283, ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems).  Mr. Seymour is also a member of the US delegation to ISO TC 283 which is developing additional standards and guidance materials to support the implementation of ISO 45001. Mr. Seymour participates in several TC 283 working/task groups and is one of two TC 283 SME Advocates.
