'Construction: Towards a safer, healthier industry' white paper

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that there were 43 fatal injuries to construction workers in 2018/19, as well as 66,000 non-fatal injuries, or 3% of the workforce. The accident rate is second only to agriculture/forestry among all industry sectors. It’s not just accidents. Less well recognized is that construction is a high-risk industry for health issues too. The HSE finds that three times as many working days are lost in the sector due to work-related illness than to injuries. Each year, approximately 80,000 construction workers in Britain suffer from an illness they believe was caused or made worse by their work. These stark statistics prompt the obvious question: are construction companies doing enough to ensure the health and safety of their people?
