The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) for ISO 9001 has now been released, signalling the final stage in the evolution of the world’s most widely adopted quality management system standard.

The FDIS provides a final view of the proposed updates to ISO 9001 ahead of publication. While many changes are editorial clarifications to the 2015 edition, the draft also introduces a stronger emphasis on quality culture, ethical behaviour and the role of leadership in driving continual improvement - marking a meaningful evolution in quality management practice.

What are the expected changes to ISO 9001?

The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) sets out refinements and new or strengthened requirements.

With ISO/FDIS 9001, more QMS-specific terms are built into the standard itself.

That means less need to cross-reference external documents, cutting down on complexity and making it easier for your teams to stay aligned.
Climate change and sustainability are now explicitly part of ISO 9001:2026’s organizational context.

Your quality management system will need to reflect these priorities, helping you meet stakeholder expectations, demonstrate ESG alignment, and stay competitive in a sustainability-driven market.
ISO/FDIS 9001 introduces ethical behaviour and quality culture as part of leadership responsibility.

Senior leaders should show clear commitment, for example through new training, open communication, and example-setting, so that these values are lived throughout your organization.
ISO/FDIS 9001 separates risk from opportunity and introduces stronger ‘opportunity-based thinking.’

A new feature of ISO 9001:2026 is the addition of Annex A.

It’s the first time ISO 9001 has been given an annex of supplementary guidance to support effective understanding and implementation. And Annex A gives substantial guidance over 15 pages, to clarify the structure, terminology and clauses of ISO 9001:2026. This is a key benefit to new and experienced users of the standard.
