Takeaways from the first global plastic pollution treaty

This past March 2nd a number of events were celebrated, from world Teen Mental Wellness Day and Ash Wednesday to National Banana Cream Pie Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

However, one more celebration should be added to this year’s list, a new plastic pollution treaty announced by 175 United Nations member countries who have committed to the development of a legally binding plastics agreement to tackle the globally critical issue of plastic pollution. This is the successful result of a concerted effort from governments, industry bodies and leading environmental groups, including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, World Wildlife Fund and The Ocean Foundation.
