Definitions – what we mean by…
- Smart City - A city can be defined as ‘smart’ when investments in human and social capital and traditional (transport) and modern (ICT) communication infrastructure fuel sustainable economic development and a high quality of life, with a wise management of natural resources, through participatory action and engagement. (Definition taken from Wikipedia)
- Internet of Things – the internet of things is a network of physical objects that are seamlessly integrated into the information network – allowing 2 way communications.
- Interoperability – Interoperability is the ability for diverse and various systems and/or organisations to seamlessly work together

- Where is interoperability needed in a smart city?
- Where are standards needed across the stack of smart city services?
- Can we learn from standardisation around Internet of things?
- What defines the success of interoperability?
- Cities will be key to determining this – as city operators any interoperability standards must be designed to be able to allow improved efficiency when operating a large metropolitan
- How can interoperability standards be created so that they benefit the whole value chain?
- What would a smart city standard look like – are there existing protocols that could be used to deliver interoperability?
