This qualification develops the foundation level of understanding for anyone involved in managing, governing implementing or auditing AI systems or AI management systems. It covers the understanding of impact and risks associated with AI development, production or use of AI, risking harm to individuals, groups and society due to lack of understanding and control.

It brings together the understanding of the concepts which underpin ISO/IEC 22989:2023 as a normative reference in ISO/IEC 42001:2023, whilst building a risk management system based on ISO/IEC 23894:2023 would be provided with the understanding and tools to conduct an AI System Impact Assessment, either in isolation or as part of an ISO/IEC 42001:12023 AI management system.

Which qualification will I achieve?

This qualification allows individuals to have an understanding of the key terms, definitions and concepts of AI, AI systems, impact assessment and risk management based upon the associated group of standards; ISO/IEC 22989:2023, ISO/IEC 42005 and ISO 23894.

You will have the knowledge to:
- Explain the core concepts and terminology associated with AI development, production and use
- Understand roles in the AI system lifecycle
- Understand why risk management is an important organizational activity and recognise ISO/IEC 23894 as part of a larger framework of standards
- Be able to define the key terms and principles within ISO/IEC 23894 and effective AI risk management systems and the relationship between AI System Impact Assessments, ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO/IEC 23894
- Possess the knowledge to create a risk management framework and how an AI System Impact Assessment fits
- Understand the importance of a risk management audit
You will have the skills to:
- Identify and apply the scope, contexts, and risk criteria for a given prompt and perform a risk analysis
- Identify the documents needed in a risk management file and be familiar with adapting changes into a risk management file
- Conduct an AI System Impact Assessment
The AI Governance Foundation qualification includes the following courses:
1. ISO/IEC 22989:2023 Understanding AI Concepts and Terminology (4hr eLearning)
2. Understanding and Implementing an AI system Impact Assessment (4hr eLearning)
3. ISO 23984 AI Risk Management (4hr eLearning)
- Anyone working with AI, including consultants
- Anyone involved in implementing, auditing, maintaining or supervising of an ISO/IEC 42001 AIMS
This qualification comprises three mandatory courses and three assessments (multiple choice questions)
After completing the foundation level qualification, why not undertake the next step and become an AI Governance Practitioner qualification holder. Practitioner level further develops the necessary knowledge and skills to strengthen AI governance by supporting safe and complaint AI adoption.

If you have already completed the AI Foundation qualification in the last 3 years you will only need to complete the ISO 42001 requirements and Implementing ISO 42001 Controls to complete the practitioner level.

The AI Governance Professional builds on the AI Governance Practitioner by developing an even fuller knowledge base, providing a more technical understanding.

On successful completion of the qualification, you’ll receive a BSI Mark of Trust that can be shared within your organization and across your network of contacts. The qualification will only be awarded if all components are successfully completed within 3 years.

In addition, you will be awarded an internationally recognized BSI training course certificate for each of the completed courses and exams.
