Challenge

Industrial biotechnology has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Innovate UK wanted to develop an enabling framework, using standards and regulations, to help realise the benefits of industrial biotechnology and help the UK accelerate towards its net zero 2050 targets.

Our solution

Commissioned by Innovate UK and the Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum (IBLF), we carried out a 5-month project that included the following key steps:

  • Exploration of 5 key sectors for industrial biotechnology application: Agritech, Biofuels, Fine and Speciality Chemicals, Plastics and Textiles
  • Interviews with 50 industrial biotechnology stakeholders and experts, and primary desk research on industry, current standards and the regulatory landscape
  • Further research to address industrial biotechnology opportunities, roadblocks, infrastructure, tax policy, and the role of regulations and standard
  • Identification of key gaps and action pathways for shaping future industrial biotechnology success.

The result

A strategic roadmap with action recommendations to maximize the environmental and economic impacts of industrial biotechnology. The roadmap:

  • Identifies where best-practice standards and regulation can support industrial biotechnology in achieving its potential to reduce UK net GHG emissions
  • Provides a robust and researched action plan for key parties over the next 3-5 years
  • Supports the creation of a level playing field for early-stage technologies and companies
  • Lays the foundations for the UK to capitalize on its world-class science and technology sectors.
