What is the UKCA Mark?

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) mark is the new UK product marking that will be required for certain products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most products that previously required the CE mark.

It will not be recognized in the EU market. Products that require CE marking will still need a CE marking to be sold in the EU.

Download a copy of our guide to UKCA Marking.

UK Government information can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/using-the-ukca-mark-from-1-january-2021

When does the UKCA mark come into force?

Most products that are currently covered under regulations and directives for CE marking will fall under the scope of UKCA marking.

BSI is an approved body (0086) for the UKCA mark and we can work with you on the required conformity assessment procedures that will allow you to affix the UKCA marking under the following areas:

  • Construction Products - download a copy of our factsheets on UKCA for construction products and also for glass
  • Personal Protective Equipment - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on PPE
  • Gas Appliances - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on gas equipment (including boilers)
  • Pressure Equipment - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on pressure equipment
  • Lifts - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on lifts
  • Marine - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on marine equipment
  • Pressure Equipment - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on pressure equipment
  • Measurement Instruments - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on measurement instruments
  • Fire Equipment - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on fire equipment
  • Radio Equipment - download a copy of our UKCA factsheet on radio equipment

At the time of writing, guidelines and timescales regarding UKCA marking for Medical Devices and IVD’s differ to those for the products listed above.

What products does the UKCA mark apply to?

Most products that are currently covered under Regulations and Directives for CE marking will fall under the scope of UKCA marking.

At the time of writing BSI will be offering UKCA marking for the following types of products:

Personal Protective Equipment >

How can organizations prepare for UKCA marking?

The steps you need to take to prepare for UKCA marking will depend on the current status of your business and your future market access requirements.

If your product requires the services of a notified body for third party assessment of conformity, you will need to check whether they are able to offer UKCA marking-related services. Only organizations who are approved bodies for UKCA marking will be able to offer this service.

We are ready to work with organizations who wish to apply for UKCA marking. Contact BSI today.

What about CE marking?

If your product requires the services of a notified body for third party assessment of conformity, and if this service has been carried out by a UK notified body, your CE marking will no longer be valid.

In order to maintain your CE marking you will need to work with a notified body registered in an EU27 member state. Your CE marking will be recognized in the EU and also in the UK until the end of 2021.

The good news is that BSI can help.

BSI is a notified body based in the Netherlands and can provide a CE marking service for the following Regulations/Directives:

  • Construction Products Regulation
  • Personal Protective Equipment Regulation
  • Gas Appliance Regulation
  • Pressure Equipment Directive

This means we can work with you to achieve CE marking for these directives / regulations.

What do I do if I need both UKCA and CE marking?

The good news is that in most cases BSI can support you with both of these. Contact us today.

Why choose BSI for UKCA?

BSI are experts in European and UK market access requirements. And with one of the widest ranges of market access solutions, years of industry experience and expertise, we can work with you to navigate this landscape.

We are ready to respond, to your UKCA requirements and are one of the first Approved Bodies to offer UKCA marking services.

How do I get my products UKCA marked with BSI?

No organization is able offer UKCA certification at this time.

BSI is now offering a UKCA Ready Verification service for organizations who want to be prepared for when UKCA marking becomes mandatory in the UK.

This service will help organizations to:

  • Preserve your access to the UK market
  • Build resilience in your business
  • Protect your business
  • Reduce the risk of Brexit

If you currently supply products into the UK that fall within one or more “CE Marking” regulations that require the use of a Notified Body, and you see the UK as an important market for your organization, talk to us today.

© The British Standards Institution (current year)

Impartiality is the governing principle of how BSI provides its services. Impartiality means acting fairly and equitably in its dealings with people and in all business operations. It means decisions are made free from any engagements of influences which could affect the objectivity of decision making.

As an accredited certification body, BSI Assurance cannot offer certification to clients where they have also received consultancy from another part of the BSI Group for the same management system. Likewise, we do not offer consultancy to clients when they also seek certification to the same management system.

The British Standards Institution (BSI, a company incorporated by Royal Charter), performs the National Standards Body (NSB) activity in the UK. BSI, together with its Group Companies, also offers a broad portfolio of business solutions other than NSB activity that help businesses worldwide to improve results through Standards-based best practice (such as certification, self-assessment tool, software, product testing, information products and training).
