Today, an organization with a “conscience” i.e. social accountability is well respected by customers and the business community. Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000:2026) is an international standard for social accountability initiated by the Council on Economic Priorities Accreditation Agency (CEPPA), USA, now known as Social Accountability International (SAI). It is a voluntary standard that can be adopted by any organization. The requirements of the standard is based on the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nation Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the Convention of the Rights of the Child of the UN, and other international human rights and labour norms and national labour laws.
Organizations may also use this standard to develop and implement a Social Management Systems to assure compliance and continual improvement in its social performance in the mentioned practices.
