Challenge

Porterbrook is a major railway rolling stock business that owns around one-quarter of the UK’s passenger rail fleet. With a major focus on sustainability as an organization, they wanted to make the way they procure and work with their suppliers industry-leading in relation to sustainability.

Our solution

BSI worked with Porterbrook to implement the principles of ISO 20400 – Sustainability Procurement, helping to drive the adoption of the international standard across the organization. BSI delivered the following:

  • Gap assessment and benchmarking of current sustainability performance against best practice
  • Training on sustainable procurement and the requirements of the standard
  • Strategic review and recommendations to drive performance and alignment to sustainable procurement best practice


Throughout the project, we engaged heavily with key Porterbrook stakeholders to understand their specific challenges and objectives. Together, we built a programme of activities that incorporated best practice and were also relevant and impactful for Porterbook as a business.

The result

Building reputation and becoming a market leader
Porterbrook have been able to evidence their alignment with the Sustainable Procurement international standard, with BSI providing a statement of conformity to the standard. In addition, the programme of identified activities will enable Porterbrook to truly become a market leader in the field.

Unlocking benefits and performance improvement
The roadmap identified multiple opportunities for performance improvements related to sustainability and the wider business. By engaging closely with key stakeholders responsible for implementation, we helped Porterbrook to reap the maximum benefits from these.
