BSI has just published the revised BS 7593:2006 Code of practice for treatment of water in domestic hot water central heating systems.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure awareness of potential problems, and of the remedies required to maintain efficiency and maximize the life of the hot water central heating system.
It also gives guidance on the preparation of the primary circuit of wet central heating systems prior to initial commissioning or re-commissioning following major remedial work (e.g. boiler replacement) and ongoing water treatment to ensure continued efficiency in operation.
Although intended to cover domestic systems with up to 45 kW heat input, it is recognized that the recommendations are also applicable to similar systems of higher heat output.

Hot and Cold Water Supply. 2nd Edition
R H Garrett, co-published with Blackwell
This highly illustrated guide to the design, installation and maintenance of hot and cold water supply systems for domestic buildings has been revised in line with BS 6700 and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. It has been written for designers and installers, technical staff in water undertakings, and property service managers.
“This is an excellent reference for the various regulations which apply to the plumbing trade. As legislation becomes more onerous, and the water regulations are tightened, you would be a fool to yourself not to have a copy to hand at all times. Should be a compulsory item in any plumber's toolkit."
