Mark Enzer OBE - Head of the National Digital Twin programme (NDTp) at CDBB and CTO of Mott MacDonald

Mark is a keen champion of innovation in the context of collaborative delivery models and he is particularly interested in the transformation of the infrastructure industry, including: systems-thinking, digital transformation, connected digital twins, information infrastructure, low-carbon sustainable solutions and the circular economy in the built environment.

As the Head of the NDTp within the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB), Mark is contributing to the leadership of this ambitious programme. As Mott MacDonald’s Chief Technical Officer, Mark is accountable to the Executive Board for technical excellence across the Group. In addition, he is the Digital Transformation workstream lead on “Project 13” for the Infrastructure Client Group, which represents the UK’s major infrastructure client organisations. Mark was the Lead Author of the Infrastructure Carbon Review, published by HM Treasury.

Dan Rossiter, Sector Lead, Built Environment, British Standards Institution (BSI) – National Standards Body

As part of his role within the British Standards Institution (BSI), Chartered Architectural Technologist Dan Rossiter provides subject matter expertise, thought leadership, and sector engagement around the digital transformation of the built environment. In addition, beyond his role at BSI, Dan has been actively supporting the construction industry locally, nationally, and internationally for several years:

Locally, Dan supports Constructing Excellence in Wales, is a councillor for the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Wales Region and co-chair of UK BIM Alliance Wales
Nationally, Dan supports Constructing Excellence, Generation for Change, the UK BIM Alliance, is a member of the CIAT council and several special interest groups as well as a contributor to national standards development within BSI and
Internationally, Dan is a supporter of buildingSMART International as well as a contributor to international standards development within CEN and ISO.

All of Dan’s knowledge and expertise is applied to his award-winning blog There’s No BIM Like Home. Where the full UK BIM Framework is used on his own mid-terrace home in South Wales; practicing what he preaches through transparency, plain language and engaging example.

Ahmed Alnaggar - Digital Construction Workstream Lead for the Construction Innovation Hub, Building Research Establishment (BRE)

Ahmed Alnaggar is currently the “Digital Construction Workstream Lead” of the Construction Innovation Hub at BRE. In this role, he is managing several teams working towards the transforming construction programme in areas related to BIM, digital transformation, digital compliance, smart buildings and Digital Twin. He has 16 years of industry and academic experience in several roles in the areas of digital construction, project/programme management, digital twin, and automation.

Before joining the hub, he held the position of “Teaching Fellow” at the Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, UCL. In this role, he led the “BIM integration with project information systems” module, contributed to the design and content development for the “Digital Engineering Management” MSC programme and supervised several MSc dissertations in the area of digital transformation in construction. He also held a UCL “Research Fellow” position that investigated the automation of compliance checking of codes and regulations for healthcare buildings.

Ahmed’s current industry-based PhD research is investigating digital transformation of lifecycle asset management using BIM and the Internet of things (IoT) technology using Socio-Technical view of the digital twin, and he has an MSc degree in “Information Systems Management” from University of Liverpool. Based on his research, he produced several academic publications and conducted presentations in leading national and international conferences about digital transformation and innovation in the built environment.

Peter Caplehorn - Chief Executive, Construction Products Association

Peter focuses on engaging with policy makers and industry leaders to raise the profile of the products sector and members’ businesses, grow the market and reduce regulatory risk. Peter is a Chartered Architect with more than 35 years of experience. He has represented the CPA at the Industry Response Group, initiated by the UK Government to advise and organise a response that will help make existing buildings safe in the wake of the Grenfell disaster. In addition, Peter is the chair of CB/- (the British Standards Institution’s strategic committee for construction); chair of RIBA’s Regulations and Standards Group; chair of the BIM Task Group’s BIM4Regs working group; chair of the CIC health and safety committee; and until recently after nine years in the role, deputy chair of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC). Peter also served eight years as a RIBA Council member.

Anthony Burd - Associate Director and Head of Built Environment, BSI – National Standards Body

Ant heads up the Built Environment Sector team at the National Standards Body. In addition to providing subject matter expertise and thought leadership he also oversees the identification of new areas of research, standardization and supporting product needs, via engagement with key stakeholders from across government and the wider sector. He also oversees the promotion of the standards portfolio to national and international marketplaces.

A Chartered building surveyor and engineer by background, he has more than 32 years’ experience working in the sector, having worked as both an enforcer, and for 16 years was the UK fire regulator and then head of technical policy for the English Building Regulations. Ant has considerable experience in working directly for UK government ministers and representing the UK at European Commission level on construction related discussions and negotiations.

Ant is a full member of the Government’s statutory Building Regulations Advisory Committee and is Immediate Past President of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.

Paul Shillcock - Managing Director, Operam

Paul specialises in the development and implementation of business processes for the management and collaborative production of information – often referred to as Building Information Modelling (BIM) - during the delivery and operational phase of built assets.

As an advisor, Paul uses his knowledge and experience to support asset owners, construction clients and delivery teams to establish their unified approach to information management (BIM) and, using Operam’s Digital Transformation Framework, to manage its progressive and sustained adoption at an organisational level.

Paul’s support and dedication to the construction industry’s digital revolution has been rewarded with a prominent role in support of the current UK Government Construction Strategy; notably co-author of PAS1192-2:2013, member of the Construction Project Information Committee (CPIC) and inaugural Chair of BIM4Infrastructure(UK). Paul has also been invited by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to join an international working group, as a UK Expert, tasked with developing a series of international standards (ISO 19650) for information management when using building information modelling; on behalf of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Ian Tansey - Managing Director, ProDroneWorx

Ian Tansey is the Managing Director of ProDroneWorx. We combine the latest advances in terrestrial 3D laser scanning and drone technology to provide our clients with a wide range of survey grade accurate digital mapping, inspection, modelling and surveying services across the UK. Using digital or reality capture data improves the management of assets, provides deeper data insights, better collaboration on projects, improved data deliverables to clients plus cost and risk reductions. The 2D/3D digital data can be used for land assessments, surveying, earthworks, stockpile measurements, planning proposals, progress monitoring, as-built vs design, project design, inspection or Scan To BIM/REVIT Modelling of assets/projects.

Roderic Bunn - Consultant, WME Boom & University College London (UCL)

Roderic Bunn has a track record in researching the performance of non-domestic buildings, from their energy and carbon dioxide emissions to measuring the wellbeing and satisfaction of occupants. Roderic writes and lectures widely on building engineering and on the role of human behaviour in building performance, and advises building owners and building design teams on ways to ensure design ambitions are achieved in reality.

Roderic edited the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers Journal (CIBSE) for 16 years. Between 1995-2001 he led the ground-breaking PROBE building performance evaluation research project. This research was instrumental in fabric airtightness standards and energy measurement techniques being included in the UK Building Regulations. He also worked on the Carbon Trust’s Low Carbon Buildings Performance programme (2011), was lead evaluator on InnovateUK’s Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) programme (2011-2105) and Invest in Innovative Refurbishment programmes (2013-2015).

Roderic helped develop the graduated handover and building performance improvement process Soft Landings into a new professional service for construction industries around the world. The method has been adopted by the UK Government for central procurement (Government Soft Landings), and a version published in 2016 for the Australia and New Zealand property markets.

Roderic has authored and co-authored a number of industry guides, notably the Soft Landings Framework, How to Procure Soft Landings, and the construction reality-checking processdeveloped for Soft Landings projects: Pitstopping. He has also authored and co-authored academic papers on occupant satisfaction and energy use. Roderic has a particular focus on post-occupancy evaluation of schools, educational buildings, and offices. He was chief editor for the 2006 Department of Education guide: Design of Sustainable Schools: Case studies.

Roderic has recently completed a Doctorate in Engineering at the Bartlett, University College London, and a Master of Research (MRes) programme focusing on lighting design, occupant wellbeing, and passive solar design. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Silver Medallist of the CIBSE.

Matthew Jensen, AssocRINA - Director, Fraiserline

Matthew began his early career as a trainee Quantity Surveyor specialising in Power Generation, ME Systems, Civil Engineering and Marine projects. He undertook his further studies in Architectural design, achieving a highly commended first-class honours degree before working across the USA and London. Matthew is now the founding Director of Fraiserline Architecture, a multi-disciplinary consultancy within the Passenger Marine, DFMA and Hospitality sectors. Matthew also co-founded Paromat, a start-up to offer innovative IoT and data-capture solutions to passenger vessels.

In 2016, Matthew proudly collaborated with the project team for the new HMS Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier, the largest and grandest warship ever commissioned by the Royal Navy, by co-delivering innovative proposals for a Royal Wardroom and Admirals Dining Quarters. The installation was then executed and completed in late 2017.

Matthew is also a featured innovation and technology writer and has contributed to Airliner World Magazine, Onboard Hospitality Magazine, AEC Magazine, Premier Hospitality, Cruise and Ferry Magazine, Premier Construction, Develop3D Magazine, Cruise Interiors Magazine, FINN Aviation Press and many more.

Furthermore, Matthew has previously delivered projects for leading Cruise and Hospitality brands including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, The Royal Navy, Noble Caledonia, British Airways, American Airlines, Hilton Hotels and Cruise Maritime Voyages.

Jaimie Johnson - Director, Head of Global Systems, Bryden Wood

Jaimie joined Bryden Wood – an integrated practice of architects, analysts, engineers, creative technologists and industrial designers – shortly after its formation in 1995. Jaimie leads the application of systems to the delivery and operation of high performing assets. This includes design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) solutions and new data-led, digital workflows for government and private sector clients in the UK, US, Europe and Asia.

Jaimie was the co-author of the benchmark strategy documents, ‘Delivery Platforms for Government Assets’, and ‘Platforms: Bridging the gap between construction + manufacturing’. These have been adopted as a foundation for the UK Government’s initiative to create a more productive, value-driven construction sector.

Jaimie is the Design Lead for the Construction Innovation Hub, which was established to drive innovation and technological advances in the UK construction and infrastructure sectors.

Paul Surin - Global Lead BIM & Built Environment, Centre of Competence, International Business Machine Corporation (IBM)

I am a positive, proactive and results-driven senior executive with a highly successful track record in leading both internal and external business strategies and teams. I am passionate about innovating and transforming business models which have been challenged by new technologies, new competitors, and market shifts, delivering innovative and commercially favourable solutions to all technical, commercial and digital matters. I have gone from being a managing director of a small innovative house-builder, throughout a medium size mechanical & electrical contractor, a large developer (building over 1,000 units/year), to a large international innovative manufacturer Wienerberger and to globally lead Built Environment & BIM at IBM. I have an extensive knowledge and understanding of Built Environment, BIM, Virtual Design Construction, Lean Construction strategies, data interoperability, AI, blockchain, construction design, management & advice, modern methods of constructions, manufacturing processes including industry 4.0, renewable energy technologies & energy performance of existing and new dwellings as well as planning regulations. I hold number of technology badges like AI, Automation, Cloud, OpenShift, industrial applications and strategies. I understand digital and multi-channel business models (transforming marketing, sales, after-sales), Incubate and scale new businesses for regions, industries and solutions.

I am a full member and a chartered engineer of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, holds MSc (Eng.) in mechanical, electronics engineering and an Eco-Building Design Postgraduate Diploma. Paul is a
BREEAM Accredited Professional, BIM Level 2 Certified Practitioner (Project Information and Task Information manager), and a chartered member of the CIOB. Paul has been a Chairman of Construction Products Europe Digitalization & BIM Task Group, strategy advisor for EU funded project DigiPlace, a member of Built Environment Executive at the Institute of Engineering & Technology, member of B/555 British Standards Institute and technical expert for CEN/TC 442 and ISO.

My previous job roles in construction sector, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors have given me a broad expertise of the industry as a whole. I am considered at expert in the field of BIM/ Digitalization (including setting up digital transformation strategies for businesses/Industry 4.0 and I am a Level 2 certified practitioner (Task and Project Information Manager), having delivered a number of talks and
seminars on the topic, I am seen as an expert in this field.

Charles Egbu - Vice Chancellor, Leeds Trinity University

Professor Charles Egbu is Vice Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University, UK. He was formerly the Dean of School of the Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University, UK, where he held the Chair in Project Management and Strategic Management in Construction. He has also held academic posts at University College London (UCL), University of Salford, Leeds Metropolitan University, and Glasgow Caledonian University. His First Degree was in Quantity Surveying [First Class Honours]. His Doctorate was obtained from the University of Salford, UK, in the area of Construction Project Management. He is currently President of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB). He is also Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), Fellow of the Association for Project Management (FAPM), Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He was until 2014 a Director and member of the Board of Trustees for the Association for Project Management (APM), and Chairman of the Professional Standards and Knowledge (PS&K) committee of the Association for Project Management. He was admitted to the Worshipful Company of Constructors in May 2017 and received the Freedom of the City of London in 2017.

He has over 25 years of experience in the Higher Education sector. He has lectured, nationally and internationally, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas such as sustainable development, resilient communities, construction economics, contract procurement, project management, construction management, and Innovation & knowledge management in complex environments. He has also developed several education and training programmes for the construction industry and construction organisations. His research is in similar areas to his education and training interests, where he has attracted more than £25m from many research funding bodies – nationally and internationally. He is an author of 12 books in Project Management, Construction Management, Knowledge Management, and Sustainable Development. He has strong links with industry, professional bodies and policy makers in several countries. He has managed several large multi-disciplinary research projects as Principal Investigator and led a number of successful Research Centres. He was formerly a Member of the Peer Review College of the UK Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) and a member of the Peer Review College of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). He also sits on many Editorial Boards, and National and International Scientific Committees to do with research in Architecture, Engineering and Construction.

He was the Chair of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM: 2010 – 2012). He is a Visiting Professor to a number of Universities in Europe, Africa, and Asia. He has supervised over 30 PhD students and examined over 80 PhD candidates world-wide; and has acted as an External Examiner to many undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in many universities all over the world. He has contributed over 350 publications in various international journals and conferences and has hosted, chaired and spoken at many conferences in his areas of expertise. In addition, he has chaired many industry and government committees to do with the built and natural environments, and produced many practitioner-based reports, policy and guidance documents.

Simon Hart - Head of Construction, Innovate UK

Simon is Head of Construction at Innovate UK on the £170m Transforming Construction ISCF programme and Management Officer for the Government’s Digital Built Britain programme. He helped establish the Centre for Digital Built Britain at Cambridge University. Simon is part of the Government’s MMC working group and an active contributor to the Construction Leadership Council.

Simon’s career spans Consultancy, Business Development and Engineering, across Manufacturing and Technology sectors. Prior to joining Innovate UK, Simon led the Connectivity Practice within an Engineering Consultancy and spent 10 years in Automotive industry delivering engineering programmes for clients.
He is a regular speaker on the London tech scene with a passion for IoT, Digital Construction and Smart Home technology.

Alex Small - BIM and Digital Platforms Manager, Tata Steel

Alex Small is the BIM & Digital Platforms manager at Tata Steel Europe. This role involves the delivery of product information (data and objects) for Tata Steel’s European businesses as well as the digital reach and interlock of the business through its data. Although starting with product-specific data, Alex’s role is now looking at ways in which a wide-ranging array of data might be linked to physical products to add value for product traceability, in-use performance, circular economy and digital construction as a whole.

Alex, who was formally a Structural Engineer at ARUP, is involved in work for the UK BIM Alliance as part of their Product Data Working Group, he also represents worldsteel, EUROFER and UK steel in BIM standards committees and digital task groups. He is an active member of Constructing Excellence - chairing their manufacturing, technology and offsite theme group – and is leading Tata Steel’s involvement in two industry digital construction pilots: One on Tagging and Tracking products and one on Smart contracts (implementation of blockchain to increase productivity). He is also leading Tata Steel’s involvement in the SEISMIC platform.

Tom Collins - Partner, Weightmans LLP

A partner in the Weightmans Construction team, Tom advises clients in relation to all construction related disputes including claims for extensions of time, loss and expense, final account disputes and defective works. He also advises on the drafting of construction agreements and associated documents.

Tom has been involved in and advised on all of the most common forms of dispute resolution including adjudication, arbitration, and litigation. Tom regularly advises in relation to, and participates in, alternative dispute resolution including mediation. He also delivers training to clients on key issues affecting their business relating to the construction industry.

Tom’s experience includes:

Advising a corporate client in relation to recovery of its losses totalling circa £3m in an arbitration arising out of works to construct a marina for a public sector body;
Advising as part of a team on a multi-million pound dispute relating to cladding works to a prestigious development undertaken in 2012 involving claims for extensions of time, loss and expense and variations;
Acting for a global consultancy in the defence of an adjudication claiming circa £1m for alleged negligence in the design of roads as part of a major highways project and successfully defending by reducing the award made to only a third of the claim value;
Advising a global design consultancy and bringing a claim in adjudication to challenge a significant number of contra-charges arising out of design

Sally Swingewood - Lead Standards Development Manager, British Standards Institution (BSI)

Sally is BSI’s Lead Standards Development Manager for business improvement and occupational health and safety management. She is responsible for working with both national and international experts to develop documents that help organizations of all types to improve the way they operate and to better protect the people who work for them.

Sally engages with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure the widest possible views are taken into account when the UK inputs to international standards and frequently holds public meetings to encourage users of the standards to raise issues and propose improvements.

Sally is the manager of the ISO technical committee responsible for the world’s first international standard on occupational health and safety management, ISO 45001, and is actively involved in the development of ISO 45003 (guidance on psychological health and safety at work) which will also be the first globally agreed standard of its type.

Aidan Bell - Co-Founder, Envirobuild

Dr Aidan Bell studied BSc Chemistry at the University of Nottingham followed by a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Manchester. He concluded his impressive series of academics in Germany at Universität Bielefeldin with postdoctoral research in Chemistry before becoming an Analyst at Deloitte, where he continued to expand his expansive knowledge base. Seeing anthropogenic climate change as a significant and genuine threat to people’s ways of life, Aidan strived to align his everyday work with the mitigation of environmental impact. In 2009, he jointly founded and owned EvoEnergy; a Solar PV construction company which grew rapidly to £25m turnover in just its third year of trading, under his leadership. Aidan successful exited the company with a trade sale in 2013 after the government cut support for the solar industry. After a variety of advisory roles to sustainable start-ups, Aidan co-founded EnviroBuild in 2015 when James Brueton approached him with the idea to develop an innovative company orientated around greening products and behaviours within the construction industry. In collaboration, James and Aidan sought to uncover a mission to source and distribute building materials that offer sustainability alongside cost-effectivity and quality. EnviroBuild aims to make the sustainable choice the easy choice, experiencing great success and growth since its creation.

Joann Russell - Head of Estates, Historic Environment Scotland

Joann Russell is Head of Estates at Historic Environment Scotland, responsible for the conservation and maintenance of the 336 properties in the care of Scottish Ministers. She is a conservation architect with a particular interest in how digital data linkages can improve strategic investment and management decisions for the historic built environment. Others areas of expertise include assessing and mitigating the impacts of Climate Change on the historic built environment, managing visitor safety in the historic built environment and working with communities to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the built heritage.

Tim Chapman - Director, Infrastructure, Arup

Tim is an Arup Director leading its London-based Infrastructure Design group. He has had extensive experience in the design of all types of infrastructure including all the design skills for major economic infrastructure, and devising how future infrastructure can best serve and shape future society. He has a personal drive for risk reduction and innovation in projects, in order to provide best value for the nation.

He is a strong advocate that the aim of our infrastructure systems should be to increase national happiness – by promoting prosperity and well-being and by its smooth operation reduce stress while raising aspirations and opportunities, especially for the most disadvantaged in society.

Tim enjoys thinking about the deep strategic issues of how the construction industry should respond to the technological wave of change that is about to engulf it – probably the biggest inflection in how it has operated since the time of the Brunels. He believes that the potential of this future is currently under-imagined and many of the impacts – both good and bad – haven’t yet been widely understood.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an honorary Fellow of Engineers Ireland.

Andrew Butterfield - Managing Director, Global Built Environment, British Standards Institution (BSI)

As Managing Director for Global Built Environment at BSI Andy is responsible for co-ordinating the global vision, strategy, roadmap and execution of with the Built Environment Sector teams operating across all BSI’S Streams and geographies. Working in collaboration with industry stakeholders and clients to drive innovation and product development activities to position BSI as an industry thought leader. He is responsible for driving the of BSI’s Built Environment Sector and to enhance BSI’s position in the wider market

Having over 30 years of experience within quality assurance, testing and certification, Andy is a qualified Mechanical Engineer and ISO 9001:2000 Lead Assessor and has extensive experience of market development for certification programmes and systems within the Built Environment sector.

Charlotte Broady - Global Head of Marketing, Built Environment, British Standards Institution (BSI)

Charlotte joined BSI in 2011 and since then has been supporting large and small organizations who contribute to the design, build, maintenance and decommission of the asset lifecycle, whether residential, commercial or infrastructure, particularly in their aspirations to become sustainable and resilient. Charlotte has been privileged to work with clients around the world in their endeavours to realize new initiatives to drive industry forward, particularly around digital transformation, as well as embedding best practice approaches around health, safety and wellbeing, environmental management and the circular economy, information resilience and effective supply chain management.
