What’s this webinar about?

The health and care system in England is responsible for an estimated 4 – 5 per cent of the country’s carbon footprint, so has a major role to play in supporting the achievement of the UK Government’s 2050 net zero target. The NHS has therefore committed to reaching net zero as soon as possible.

As part of BSI’s Net Zero Week, this webinar aims to progress the net zero conversation within the healthcare sector, and in particular illustrate how BSI can help.

To that end, this webinar includes presentations on:

Rob Turpin joined the British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2001 and is currently Head of Sector for Healthcare in the Knowledge Solutions stream.  He leads on the strategic standardization approach for the role that BSI has in supporting policy, productivity and innovation in the healthcare system.  His key area of focus include medical technology, NHS policy and innovation and population health.  The increased focus on net zero initiatives provides an opportunity to consider ways that standardisation can address challenges within the NHS infrastructure and supply chain.

Previously, Rob has been involved in managing national and international standards development programmes across a variety of subject sectors.  He has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Teesside, UK.

Aarti is a GP in Sheffield, a medical education researcher and the founder of the Greener Practice initiative which is a primary care network for climate action. The website www.greenerpractice.co.uk and twitter account @greenerpractice provide GPs and patients with access to information and resources to take action and share best practice. Aarti also co-chairs the Royal College of General Practitioners climate advisory group which advises the college on its  climate action plan.

Frank is an NHS anaesthetic Consultant and Climate Change Lead for West Yorkshire and Harrogate Healthcare Partnership. 

Since working for the British Antarctic Survey for two years, he has been trying to reduce the environmental impacts of his home and work. He sits on the environment committee of the Association of Anaesthetists, he is a Trustee at Sustrans, has an MSc in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability and is a (very) amateur beekeeper.

Kathryn has been involved in sustainability and climate change work for over 20 years. Following a period in climate change and energy consultancy, she joined the NHS in 2012. Kathryn leads a team that provides professional support to NHS Scotland boards, Scottish Government and other stakeholders in all aspects of climate change resilience, energy management and sustainability. She is currently leading the development of the NHS Scotland Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy. Kathryn is also Chair of the Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN). The SSN is the national network for public sector sustainability and climate change professionals in Scotland.

Andrew is a Chartered Structural Engineer with 20-years’ experience in multidisciplinary building design. Part of the Arup UKMEA Healthcare Executive. Co-author of the Arup Net Zero Carbon in healthcare, Modern Methods of Construction, Standardisation and Digital design guidance.
