Kitemark Hygienic Hand Sanitizers

BSI Kitemark for Hygienic Hand Sanitizers provides consumers with confidence that their chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used for hygienic hand rubs and hand washes protect their health and provides some level of protection for those around them. It demonstrates that you have put your colleagues and customers first and take great care to protect their health.

Exclusive to BSI, the foundation of the Kitemark certification are the world-class principles and guidelines on hygiene management. Organizations will be assessed against the relevant requirements of BS EN 14885 standard plus the test methods: BS EN 13727, BS EN 1500, BS EN 1499 and BS EN 14776, alongside the relevant local government guidance.

This certification scheme has been developed for chemical manufacturers and suppliers of such products who wish to demonstrate that their products have been independently assessed to perform as intended.

Once an application is received the process to achieving a BSI Kitemark starts with an initial product evaluation, known as initial type testing. This is where the product is tested for all requirements of the standard to verify that it meets all the requirements including physical, chemical and performance testing.

While this testing is on-going an assessment of the client’s quality management system is performed to ensure the product is manufactured consistently. Providing both the product and the quality management system comply with the requirements of the standards a Kitemark is issued.

The product tests are categorized on a modular basis as follows:

• Phase 1:  tests are quantitative suspension tests to establish that active substances or products under development have bactericidal, fungicidal or sporicidal activity without regard to specific areas of application. Phase 1 tests cannot be used for any product claim.
 
• Phase 2:  tests comprises two steps:

1. Step 1 tests are quantitative suspension tests to establish that a product has bactericidal, fungicidal, yeasticidal, mycobactericidal, tuberculocidal, sporicidal or virucidal activity under simulated practical conditions appropriate to its intended use;
2. Step 2 tests are quantitative laboratory tests to establish that a product has bactericidal, fungicidal, yeasticidal, mycobactericidal, tuberculocidal, sporicidal or virucidal activity when applied to a surface or skin under simulated practical conditions (e.g. surface, instrument, handwash and handrub tests);

• Phase 3:  tests are field tests under practical conditions.

For organizations that have an established and certified ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) we audit the QMS in relation to the manufacture of hand sanitizers either on-site or remotely.

Once this is done and all requirements, both product and management system are met, the Kitemark certificate is issued. Then on an ongoing - basis we:

• Audit the QMS twice per year, either on-site or remotely
• Audit test the product twice per year in the BSI labs

For organizations that do not have an established Quality Management System (QMS) in place that can be audited we will audit them against the permit requirements that are associated with the Kitemark.
