Who is this virtual conference for?

Irrespective of sector:

Tim McGarr is the Sector Lead for the Digital area within Knowledge Solutions in BSI.  Tim has specific responsibility for the direction and development of key digital standards areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Virtual/Augmented Reality. Tim has been working at BSI since 2009. Prior to BSI, Tim he spent 5 years working in the legal publisher LexisNexis in the strategy department.  Before this, Tim he worked as a management consultant for Logica (now CGI) and an internal consultant for BT. Tim has an MBA from HEC in Paris, France.

Matt Warman was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on 26 July 2019.

He was an Assistant Government Whip from 23 April 2019 to 25 July 2019.

Katherine joined techUK in May 2018 and currently leads the Data Analytics, AI and Digital ID programme.

Prior to techUK, Katherine worked as a Policy Advisor at the Government Digital Service (GDS) supporting the digital transformation of UK Government. Whilst working at the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) Katherine led AMRC’s policy work on patient data, consent and opt-out.

Katherine has a BSc degree in Biology from the University of Nottingham.

Alan Winfield is Professor of Robot Ethics at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and visiting Professor at the University of York. Winfield co-founded the Bristol Robotics Laboratory and his research is focussed on the science, engineering and ethics of intelligent robots. Winfield is an advocate for robot ethics; he sits on the executive of the IEEE Standards Association Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, and chairs Working Group P7001, drafting a new IEEE standard on Transparency of Autonomous Systems. He has published over 250 works including Robotics: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2012). 

Dr Emma Carmel is associate professor at the University of Bath, UK. Dr Carmel is a leading authority on governance and public policy across a range of policy areas, with particular expertise in international comparative research. Her publications include four books, and numerous academic articles, alongside media appearances, including on BBC, Sky, and international media, and articles for the general public. Dr Carmel is currently pathway lead on AI and public policy at the UKRI doctoral training centre in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI (ART-AI) at Bath, and her latest project is on the regulation of AI technologies internationally, with a particular interest in AI technology use in and by government. Dr Carmel also recently joined BSI committee on AI, ART/001.

Sara El-Hanfy is Innovation Lead for Machine Learning & Data at Innovate UK, a part of UK Research & Innovation. Sara works to identify, support and accelerate high growth-potential innovation in the UK, based on cutting-edge AI and data research and technology.

Sara studied at the University of Wales, Swansea where she obtained an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Sara has more than 15 years’ commercial digital experience, working for NGOs and in the private sector. For the last seven years, she has focused on machine intelligence. Prior to joining Innovate UK, she worked as an AI Consultant advising global organisations on AI development strategies and implementation.

Christine Foster is CCO at The Alan Turing Institute, responsible for driving forward the Turing’s goal to translate its data science and artificial intelligence research into real-world impact. Before joining the Turing, Christine advised Virgin Media on implementing machine learning models to personalise customer interactions, and Liberty Global on building a world-class data science team. While in NYC for twelve years, she held leadership positions at a fintech start-up, American Express, and EMI Music. She built digital analytics teams, implemented predictive models, and generally worked at the intersection of data science and business. Originally from Canada, Christine started her career as a strategy consultant with Bain & Company. She did her MBA at INSEAD and her BA in Economics at the University of Toronto.

In November 2020, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) announced Christine's appointment as a non-executive director.

Dr Andrew Thompson is a Senior Research Scientist in Data Science at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). His research interests focus on inverse problems and machine learning, and he leads NPL’s work on trustworthy machine learning.  Before joining NPL, he was Visiting Assistant Professor at Duke University, and Departmental Lecturer in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford.

Anna is Head of AI and Robotics at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). In this role, Anna has led cross-UKRI activities on AI, notably the UKRI AI Review which aimed to develop an integrated interdisciplinary roadmap for the UK in AI, and resulted in the UKRI Statement of Opportunities on AI, which sits alongside the AI Council’s Roadmap in influencing UK AI Strategy. Anna’s team leads on the development and delivery of strategic research investments in AI, autonomous systems, and robotics, including the UK Trustworthy Autonomous Systems programme, the Turing AI Fellowships, and AI for Science and Government amongst others. Prior to her current role, Anna has worked at EPSRC for almost a decade, in a range of roles across engineering, physical sciences, healthcare technology, and ICT. Prior to this, Anna’s background was in scientific research.

In her role as Executive Vice Chair, Ann represents Mastercard around the world, focusing on inclusion, diversity and innovation. She plays the important role of senior ambassador and executive leader and sits as part of the company’s global management committee. Prior to her current appointment, Ann was President of International
Markets responsible for the management of all Mastercard customer-related activities in over 200 countries.

Ann brings more than 20 years’ experience working in senior management positions across Europe and the U.S. Prior to joining Mastercard in 2011, Ann was head of the
Financial Services Group with Alvarez & Marsal, CEO of Transaction Banking at ABN-AMRO and held senior positions at Citigroup.

Ann is currently chair of ICE Clear Europe, owned by the Fortune 500 company Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). She is also global chair of the 30% Club and the chair of the Financial Alliance for Women. In addition, Ann is the lead non-executive board member for the UK government’s department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and is a member of the UK government’s AI Council. She has a Pure Mathematics degree and honorary doctorate from Sheffield University and a M.Sc. with research into medical statistics and honorary doctorate from Newcastle University.

Evie is recognised as an accomplished Chief Data Protection Officer and Chief Privacy Officer, representing one of the largest private companies in the world, owning a significant global footprint in confectionery, pet food, pet care and vet services. Evie is responsible for leading and advising on all aspects of Mars data stewardship, data collection, data protection, AI and privacy as well as legal strategies and policies, including GDPR, CCPA and global privacy market rollouts and integrations, data breaches and digital media across businesses.
25+ years’ extensive legal experience with expertise in data management and protection, digital and technology, corporate compliance, international business transactions, brand protection, IP, M&A and enterprise risk management. Her professional experience ranges from local (UK), regional (EMEA, Russia & CIS) to global. Working for major branded FMCGs Evie has contributed to company value creation through extending brand footprints and protecting their distinctive assets across media, pharma, confectionery, food, petcare and veterinary care.

Evie is a UK lawyer, a Chartered Company Secretary, Chartered Governance Professional, qualified marketer from the Cyprus Institute of Marketing (affiliated to the UK’s Chartered Institute of Marketing), Fellow of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (FIP) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Manufacturing, Commerce and Arts. Evie has been repeatedly endorsed as a leading in-house lawyer by the outside legal press, was most recently named as the Technology, Media and Telecoms Lawyer of the Year by Chambers and Partners and prior to that, European IP Lawyer of the Year by WorldLeaders. She is also a member of the Mars Ethics and Compliance Team which celebrated achieving the coveted Ethisphere World’s Most Ethical Companies Award for two consecutive years.

Craig is a highly experienced Senior Manager in a commercial environment driving teams forward by demonstrating leadership and innovation.  Craig is a data professional with over 25 years working with data across multiple industry sectors both in the public and private sectors and different geographic locations including the UK, Europe, USA and Australia.  Specialising in Data Science, Data Innovation and Data Operations. 

The role at Lloyd's has enabled me to transfer my data skills to the specialist commercial insurance industry sector.  This in turn has allowed me to improve my level of knowledge and influence into using innovative new digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and the application of Data Science techniques such as Machine Learning (ML) to drive innovation forward at Lloyd’s.

David Cuckow is responsible for the UK’s National Standards Body (NSB) global strategy on all things digital, supporting cross-sector industries and government stakeholders to innovate by accelerating the adoption of digital technologies, identifying and codifying best practice in order to transform and improve business, process and culture for both social and economic benefit. Previous roles include Director and leadership positions at SAS, CA, Nortel, Alcatel and Racal.

Nathan Coulson is a Technologist at the Digital Catapult, specialising in AI and Machine Learning. Nathan is the technical lead on Machine Intelligence Garage acceleration programme for AI startups and has a focus on the responsible adoption of AI. His previous work in AI includes working with the Government of Portugal to build a prototype recommendation system for their employment department, as part of a Data Science for Social Good fellowship at Imperial College, and publishing his MSc thesis paper on “Adaptive microservice scaling for elastic web applications” in the IEEE IoT journal. Prior to transitioning to an AI & Machine Learning specialism, Nathan has also worked in project management and technical sales capacities for two startups in the EdTech (Insane Logic) and IT data visualisation (Squared Up) domains as well as for startup accelerators focusing on social entrepreneurship (UnLtd) and advanced digital technologies (Wayra). Nathan holds a MSc in Data Science from Birkbeck, University of London, and a BA in Economics and Politics from SOAS, University of London.

Pete Burnap is Professor of Data Science & Cybersecurity at Cardiff University. He is Director of Cardiff’s NCSC/EPSRC Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR). He leads AI for cybersecurity research at Airbus DTO on a part-time secondment basis. He has been involved in grants in worth in excess of £14m, leading large awards from EPSRC, ESRC and industry on cyber security analytics – the fusion of AI, Cybersecurity and Risk. He sits on the UK Government AI Council.

Milan is a member of Microsoft’s corporate standards group. He chairs BSI’s committee on Artificial Intelligence which mirrors the ISO/IEC JTC1 subcommittee on AI which has a broad and growing membership. Milan is also an active contributor to international standards work on information security and data privacy.

Ronald Tse is the founder of Ribose. Ribose works closely with leading organizations in delivering cutting-edge cybersecurity and standardization solutions, and is certified to multiple ISO management systems. Ronald is active in technical standardization: he represents the Standards Council of Canada and CalConnect in multiple ISO and IEC committees. He serves as Vice President of CalConnect, Director at the Board of ECCMA, convener of ISO/TC 154/WG 4 and WG 5, and as a member of BSI Pacific’s Certification Advisory Council. He is a CSA Research Fellow, IAPP Fellow of Information Privacy, CCIE Emeritus #9650 and named to CSA's Ron Knode Award. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Brown University.

Roger Taylor is Chair of the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. He has worked as an entrepreneur, a regulator and a writer. He has argued for a rebalancing of control over data and information towards citizens and civil society. He is a member of the advisory panel to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation and is the former Chair of Ofqual, the qualifications regulator.

He has written two books: God Bless the NHS (Faber & Faber (2014) and Transparency and the Open Society (Policy Press 2016). He co-founded Dr Foster which pioneered the use of public data to provide independent ratings of healthcare. He worked as a correspondent for the Financial Times in the UK and the US and, before that, as a researcher for the Consumers' Association.

Ali Shah, Head of Technology Policy, is responsible for ensuring the ICO can respond to complex societal challenges presented by emerging technology developments. His expertise in AI, data and emerging technology is combined with a passion for understanding the impact of technology on society, and the ethical and societal questions that emerge.
