The Circular Economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy and is restorative and regenerative by design. It looks beyond the current take-make-waste industrial model and aims to design out waste and pollution, keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times, and regenerate natural systems. The UK has taken a leading role in creating the first standard in this area, and in 2017 BSI published BS 8001 which provides a practical framework and guidance for organizations to implement the principles of the circular economy.

As part of its Well-being of Future Generations Act, the Welsh Government identified the circular economy as a key area for Innovation and R&D, and approached BSI to examine how it might use BS 8001:2017 Framework for Implementing the Principles of the Circular Economy in Organizations to support its work.

BSI designed and delivered a series of workshops and masterclasses for the in-house team of Innovation Specialists and for a range of Welsh businesses. The aim of these courses is to use BS 8001 to inform organizations across the country about circular economy principles, and to grow the circular economy in Wales.
