What’s this Competence for the Fire Safety Professional webinar about?

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, Dame Judith Hackitt’s review identified a critical lack of competence in the UK construction sector. The Institution of Fire Engineers now believes that professional registration is the best way for fire safety practitioners to demonstrate their competence. This webinar will explore the competence landscape, outline options for fire safety professionals and discuss third-party enhancements that have been or will be introduced soon.

Clare Price is Sector Lead – Built Environment at BSI. She is a Standards professional with extensive experience in sharing Standards knowledge, managing Standards Committees and recently, working with industry and government to identify standards needs and deliver complex standards projects.

She led the standards workstream in the Each Home Counts Independent Review of energy efficiency and renewable energy where she helped to define and deliver the programme of Standards development, including the PAS 2035 framework, under the Retrofit Standards Task group. A new BSI Technical Committee for Retrofit is being established in 2020. She sits on the Green Construction Board infrastructure working group to provide input on standardization for carbon management and low carbon concrete. She is Project Lead on the Built Environment Competence Standards programme.

Peter leads the IFE in technical matters in a new role designed to provide better technical support to members. He represents the organisation on national and international professional forums, contributes to post-Grenfell initiatives in the UK and worldwide, drives the development and remit of the Technical Strategy Advisory Group (TSAG), leads on the continuous development of the IFE’s body of knowledge, manages the IFE’s responses to consultations and acts as the main point of contact for technical enquiries, helping members to understand the Institution’s policy positions in a range of technical areas.

He holds an Engineering Doctorate where he investigated resilient fire engineering building design. Peter also chairs the British Standards Technical Committee FSH/24, developing and codifying fire safety engineering practices. As an active volunteer within the IFE, he helps to promote the profession and registration of professional engineers with the Engineering Council.

A Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Scientist and a Registered Fire Risk Assessor, since 2012 he has been leading the independent safety, fire and risk engineering practice he founded.

Prior to this, Peter was an Associate Director at the Fire Protection Association, and earlier an Associate Director with a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy. His earlier career was spent as a fire consultant within the healthcare sector and within the fire detection and alarm industry.
