The health and care system in England is responsible for an estimated 4 – 5 per cent of the country’s carbon footprint – so has a major role to play in supporting the net zero target. The NHS has therefore committed to reaching net zero as soon as possible.

As part of BSI’s Net Zero Week, this webinar will explore several areas critical to carbon reduction in healthcare. Presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion and Q&A.

Rob Turpin joined the British Standards Institution (BSI) in 2001 and is currently Head of Sector for Healthcare in the Knowledge Solutions stream.  He leads on the strategic standardization approach for the role that BSI has in supporting policy, productivity and innovation in the healthcare system.  His key area of focus include medical technology, NHS policy and innovation and population health.  The increased focus on net zero initiatives provides an opportunity to consider ways that standardisation can address challenges within the NHS infrastructure and supply chain.

Previously, Rob has been involved in managing national and international standards development programmes across a variety of subject sectors.  He has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Teesside, UK.

Michelle has had a diverse career in pharmaceutical and medical devices, first working in the industry in 1990.

A graduate biologist with a long-standing career in sales, management, marketing, and market development, Michelle chose to re-train in Health Economics at York University, adding the value ‘spectacles’ and ‘hearing-aids’ she employs today when working with Boston Scientific, their customers, and various industry bodies.

She sits on the Board of HealthTech Ireland, leading the Market Access workstream.

She is in charge of one of the commercial EMEA workstream at Boston Scientific with regards to Environmental Sustainability and is currently completing a course in Sustainability in Business with the University of Cambridge. She is Chair of the Sustainability group, and Vice-Chair of the Commercial Policy group at ABHI.

After working since 2000 for well-known Cambridge design consultancies on medical, consumer, light industrial, smart energy, and transportation projects, Cormac founded Kestrel Technology Consulting in 2017. Kestrel provides product development, project management and business development consultancy, mainly in the medical device sector including projects on drug delivery, surgical, ophthalmic, diagnostic, biotech, and patient handling. As a long-standing committee member on BS8887: Design for Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly and End of Life Processing, Cormac has also worked on pioneering approaches to sustainable design and manufacture in industry. Responding to the needs of the Medical sector, Cormac has taken on the role of project lead on standards for sustainable device design specifically for the medical industry, and through Kestrel provides consultancy services in this space. Cormac also works as a lecturer in Engineering Design and Global Business Environment and International Strategy.
