BSI helps organizations to futureproof their privacy information management

The new standard helps organizations to manage operational controls in the new era of privacy regulatory and compliance requirements

BSI, the business improvement company, releases BS ISO/IEC 27701:2019 Security techniques — Extension to ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27002 for privacy information management — Requirements and guidelines to provide organizations with the operational controls to support the response to new privacy requirements like the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Organizations are facing a dual-challenge, to collect and process an increasing volume of data, whilst ensuring compliance to the new and growing list of privacy regulation and new legislation being developed across the globe.

The standard offers a framework for Personally Identifiable Information (PII) controllers and processors to protect collected personal data. It sets out a programme to establish, implement and maintain a Privacy Information Management System (PIMS), as an extension to an ISO IEC 27001 Information Security Management System (ISMS).

It is applicable to all types and sizes of organizations, including public and private companies, government entities and not-for-profit organizations, which are PII controllers and/or PII processors processing PII in an Information Security Management System (ISMS).

An organization complying with the requirements of the standard will generate documentary evidence of how it handles the processing of PII. Such evidence can be used to facilitate agreements with business partners where the processing of PII is mutually relevant.

This is a task that is becoming increasingly challenging, given the growing volume of data and the new data privacy legislation. The updated standard helps organizations to futureproof PIMS to reflect the realities of the digital world that we live in.

“The standard has been developed to help build trust and transparency between organizations, by providing a clear and more effective approach to data protection.”  

49 counties participated in the development of ISO/IEC 27701:2019, including UK industry representatives from Google Trust; Microsoft; IBM; CPIN; Data Protection Forum; ABCB; IT Governance.
