Nick Fleming is Head of Transport and Mobility Standards at BSI (British Standards Institution) and programme lead on the CAV standards programme supported by UK government (CCAV). Nick has over 10 years’ experience in standardization working across emerging technologies and with the automotive and transport industry to develop both national and international standards that support adoption of new technologies, promote innovation, safety, security and consumer protection.

John McDermid became Professor of Software Engineering at the University of York in 1987. His work covers a broad range of issues in systems, software and safety engineering. He became Director of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation funded Assuring Autonomy International Programme in January 2018, focusing on safety of robotics and autonomous systems. He has acted as an advisor to government and industry for several decades, including advising Five, the UK MoD and Rolls-Royce. He was appointed a Non-Executive Director of the HSE in October 2019. John became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2002 and was awarded an OBE in 2010.

Edith Holland is a Chief Engineer for Functional Safety in the System & Safety team at automotive consultancy company HORIBA MIRA. She joined HORIBA MIRA in 2019 as a Chief Engineer for Functional Safety and in that role is  responsible for planning, technical governance and delivery of customer FS and SOTIF projects, development of FS processes and Functional Safety training.  

She is also one of the UK experts to ISO/TC 22/SC 32/WG 8, which is the working group responsible for preparation of ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.

Prior to joining HORIBA MIRA Edith worked as a Functional Safety engineer at Jaguar Land Rover and during that time her projects included carrying out functional safety activities on various projects in different parts of the business (Powertrain, Electrical incl. ADAS and Chassis), process development and FS governance.

Edith is a Chartered Engineer with the IET and holds a Masters Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bristol and a Postgraduate Certificate in System Safety Engineering from the University of York.

Prashanth is an automotive safety engineer with more than 15 years of experience in function development, functional safety and SOTIF. After completing his master's degree in automotive engineering from the ESTACA, he started his career working on the specifications, verification and validation of various E&E functions at the system and vehicle level. From 2014, he focused on functional safety, delivering ISO 26262 projects on both sides of the V-model. Since 2018, he has led various SOTIF (ISO 21448) projects covering the design, verification, and validation of driving automation systems ranging from SAE levels 0 to 4. He currently works as a senior safety engineer at Wayve, contributing to the development of a safety assurance framework for an end-to-end ML-based autonomous driving system.

Dr Siddartha Khastgir is the Head of Verification & Validation of CAV at WMG, University of Warwick, UK, leading various Collaborative R&D projects with industrial & academic partners. His research areas include test scenarios generation, safety, use of simulation for testing among many others. He represents the UK on various ISO Technical Committees and is the lead author for new ISO standards for Low-Speed Automated Driving (LSAD) systems (ISO 22737) and Taxonomy for ODD (ISO 34503). He is also the technical author for BSI PAS 1883 and also a member of the steering groups for the BSI PAS programme.

He has received numerous national and international awards for his research contributions, including being on Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2018 list and the prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship.

Paul Spence provides consultancy services to maximize engineering efficiency by collecting and presenting the right data. Harnessing the power of simulation to capture, measure and develop real-world performance.

After a degree in Mathematical Physics, Paul spent nearly a decade in flight simulation, developing the software for the instructor station and control platforms.

As Chief Technologist at McLaren Applied for over 25 years, Paul led the evolution of the telemetry and analysis tools that are a key part of Formula One’s rapid development and decision cycles. Paul created many of the key tools that the teams use to get the best out of their data as well as helping the FIA regulate more objectively through the sharing and standardising of the right data.

Paul is now working in the autonomous vehicle space and telecoms industry to help deliver the reliability, performance and safety achieved in simulation to real world operation.

Brian is a Partner at Burges Salmon and chairs the firm’s Transport Technology and Intelligent Transport practice.  This includes Burges Salmon’s involvement as partner on 5 Innovate CAV projects: Venturer, Flourish, Capri, RoboPilot and MultiCAV as well as supporting Zenzic on cybersecurity in CAVs (ResiCAV+) and Innovate/CCAV on operation of off-highway automated vehicles.  These projects have involved analysis and recommendations on aspects of CAV liability, safety, data, cybersecurity, regulation and insurance.

In respect of standards, Brian and the Burges Salmon team have been technical author, steering group member or advisory group member of the following BSI CAV PAS standards: 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1884.  Brian is also an advisory group member for BSI Flex 1890 – CAV Vocabulary and for BSI Flex 1889 – CAV Scenarios.  Burges Salmon is a co-founder of the Connected and Automated Mobility All-Party Parliamentary Group.
