BSI Inspectorate Open New Laboratory in Dubai
7 January 2004
New lab provides commercial and environmental benefits
BSI Inspectorate, a leading independent inspection and analysis company, today announced the opening of its unique U.A.E laboratory in Dubai. This new facility will predominantly conduct two main areas of testing; agro-commodities and, for the first time, the purity and standard of the water supply to improve the local environment and public health.
Located in Rashidiya area, in close proximity to Dubai international airport, the major aims of the operation are to utilise its growing laboratory capabilities in agro-commodities, food, water and environmental testing. Local businesses and government organisations will benefit from a one-stop-shop for food and water laboratory testing services, as opposed to having to use costly and often less comprehensive subcontractors.
Chris Fenton, managing director of BSI Inspectorate, explains: "Water quality is an essential element to the overall sustainability of this Emirate's economy and high standards are expected from the people that live and visit there.
"The core objective of BSI Inspectorate's global business is minimising all manner of risk-associated problems through independent inspection, analysis and testing of commodities. We are confident that our professional, third party analysis will improve trading and protect the commercial interests of both buyers and sellers.
Dr. P.S. Hariram of BSI Inspectorate says: "Although this is a commercial laboratory, involved in the facilitation of global trade it still plays an essential part in protecting the environment. Through the independent testing of commodities such as oil, petrochemicals, metals, minerals and agricultural commodities, potentially harmful toxins and impurities are identified and reported. This new lab protects both the consumer and businesses in Dubai."
BSI's entry into the water testing field would be widely welcomed by various clients across UAE and neighbouring countries.
Dubai demands a food and water testing laboratory because its economy is driving towards non-oil sector revenue, against the oil income on which the country was previously dependent. According to the Department of Economic Development Dubai's statistics report of 2002, the GDP figure for Hotel and Tourism had crossed the traditional Oil Sector GDP.
Users of such services include hotels, food manufacturers, Government organisations, environmental consultants, shipping companies, water treatment plants and drinking water bottling companies. Among those, BSI will provide water quality testing for swimming pools and potable water sampled from various branches of Le Royal Meridien, Jumeirah Beach International and the prestigious Royal Mirage.
Further investment is planned to expand the laboratory capability both within the fields of water and food testing and other areas of commercial testing in due course. The laboratory intends to obtain ISO: 17025 accreditation at the earliest opportunity, which provides an economical means of demonstrating the laboratory's continuing technical competence, impartiality, objectivity and independence from the manufacturer, their authorised agent, supplier or commercial competitor.
